For Harrison Mullens, the opportunity to play Division I football was one he could not ignore. The Pella High School senior-to-be made his official college commitment public recently.

Mullens, a 6-foot-2, 170-pound athlete, has committed to play for South Dakota State University.

"After extensive deliberation, I am excited to announce that I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at South Dakota State University," Mullens posted on social media. "I am thankful to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for blessing me with the gifts to glorify him through sport. I am grateful for all of the teachers, coaches, mentors and teammates that have instructed and encouraged me throughout my life.

"I am grateful to my family. Words cannot adequately express my love, gratitude and appreciation for my parents and the sacrifices made so that I could pursue my dreams. Thank you to my village. The best is yet to come."

Mullens helped Pella reach the Class 4A state championship game last year. He caught 31 passes for a team-high 610 yards with eight touchdowns, averaging almost 20 yards per reception. He also had 10.5 tackles on defense for the Dutch.

On the basketball court, Mullens played in all 25 games, scoring 125 points with 18 rebounds, 11 assists an 26 made 3-pointers. He also ran at state track for Pella this past spring, placing second in the 400, fifth in the 100, third in the sprint medley relay and fifth in the 4x200 as the Dutch finished second overall.

Mullens showed off his incredible speed by setting school records in the 100 (10.63), 200 (21.9), 400 (48.49) and as part of the 4x400 and sprint medley relays. He also was a Drake Relays qualifier in the 100 and 400.
