The whirlwind surrounding out of favour Broncos star, Selwyn Cobbo, is intensifying with a contract decision thought to be imminent.
Until now, Broncos management, led by CEO Dave Donaghy and head coach Michael Maguire, have held firm on a release—already rejecting initial approaches from both the Dragons and Cowboys.
But with Cobbo yet again overlooked in the Broncos 17 to play the Warriors this weekend, and likely to run out in Queensland Cup for the fourth weekend in a row, at least one Broncos great has had enough.
“I don’t understand why they wouldn’t let him go, and free up some money,” Gorden Tallis said last night on Fox Sports.

“They let a guy go for liking a social media post (Marty Taupau) and paid him out.
“You’d think if they’re being offered some money for a guy playing reserve grade, using the same sort of business sense, you’d let him go.”
As widely reported in recent days, 23-year-old Cobbo has been offered a low-ball contract to remain at the Broncos in 2026, believed to be in the range of $300,000 per season, less than half his current deal which expires at the end of 2025.
Cobbo’s management is understood to be seeking offers in excess of $650,000 a season.
Meanwhile, the NRL’s biggest club, Brisbane, has prioritised extensions to senior players Kotoni Staggs, 26, and Adam Reynolds, 34.
Cobbo’s wing replacement, Josiah Karapani, has also signed a new two-year deal—as has Melbourne Storm outside back, Grant Anderson, who will link with the Broncos from 2026.
The NRL mid-season transfer deadline is next Monday, June 30.
