Martin Taupau and the Brisbane Broncos have parted ways with immediate effect after a controversy involving a social media post.

The 35-year-old liked a social media post from ex-player Elijah Taylor criticising Broncos coach Michael Maguire.

According to Code Sports, Taupau has met with Broncos leaders and Maguire in the past 24 hours and his departure will be confirmed next week.

Taupau had been named in Brisbane's extended squad for Sunday's match against the Dragons, but now won't play for the Broncos or their feeder club Souths Logan.

With the Broncos currently in seventh position as a battle to make the final eight looms, Maguire has flexed his muscle in order to unify the team with the culture he is trying to build.

Taupau was unlikely to be a big part of the Broncos plans in 2025 regardless, having only played one match so far this season.

The veteran will be hoping another NRL club extends his career as he returns to New South Wales.

Taupau has played the past 15 years in the NRL, making 256 appearances at the Bulldogs, Tigers, Sea Eagles and Broncos.

He is most famous for his seven-season stint at the Sea Eagles between 2016-22.
