Sumner-Fredericksburg’s Chloe Bolte made history at the Iowa girls state golf championships.
Bolte became just the third Iowa girls golfer in history to win four individual titles, shooting a 1-under to help her team place third overall in Class 2A. The other two are Sharon Fladoos of Dubuque from 1958-61 and Jessie Sindlinger of Charles City from 2010-13.
A girls state golf championship has been held in Iowa since 1956. Bolte will compete for Missouri State next season.
In 4A, Morgan Rupp of Linn-Mar captured a third consecutive championship, becoming just the 13th golfer to achieve such a feat. Rupp shot a 72 to overcome opening round leader Ainley Wilson of Iowa City West by a single stroke.
“Coming up to this week, I feel like I tried to take the expectations off of myself and really just focus on the golf and not think about the end result,” Rupp told the Cedar Rapids Gazette. “I feel like that really helped me stay in the right mentality throughout this week.
“It’s kind of a surreal feeling (winning three). I honestly didn’t feel like I was going to be able to accomplish what I’ve accomplished the past three years. It’s really just kind of crazy.”
Rupp, who was fifth as a freshman, has signed to golf at the University of South Dakota next year.
In the team race, Ames carded a 315 in the second round of play to surge past Waukee Northwest.
Just like Rupp, Gilbert claimed a third consecutive 3A team title behind individual winner Ava Lohrbach. Ella Lohrbach made it a 1-2 finish for Gilbert on the leaderboard.
Easton Valley won the 1A title for a second straight season while Jaylee Shafer from Mount Ayr was the individual state champion.
