IHSA “State Series” overview

The first Class 3A semifinal at 10 a.m. CT pits the Vikings of Burbank (St. Laurence) against the Celtics of New Lenox (Providence Catholic).

St. Laurence has a 23-7 record, and the Vikings are making their first-ever appearance in the “State Series.” As for Providence Catholic, the Celtics are making their first trip to state since 2018 and are still seeking their first championship.

Then at 12:30 p.m. CT Friday is the other 3A semifinal, as the Titans of Chatham (Glenwood) takes on the Wolves of Crystal Lake (Prairie Ridge).

Glenwood brings a 35-1 record into the “State Series,” and has made it this far since winning the 3A title in 2014, at this point the Titans’ lone title. Prairie Ridge also brings an impressive record, as the Wolves come in at 28-1-1. They are also in the “State Series” for the first time ever.

The two semifinal losers play at 9 a.m. CT Saturday for third place, while the two semifinal winners play at 11:30 a.m. for the championship.

In Class 4A, the first semifinal is set for 3 p.m. CT Friday, and will pit the Porters of Lockport Township against the Fillies of Barrington.

Lockport Township (31-9) is led by one of the state’s premier coaches in Marissa Chovanec, who is 601-200-2 since taking over the Porters in the 2003 season. She led Lockport Township to a state title in her second season (2004) and brought the Porters back to the “State Series” the following season.

Barrington (34-3-1) has a coaching legend of its own in Perry Peterson, who has been with the Fillies since 1993 and has a career record of 1,005-218-1. He is taking the Fillies to the “State Series” for the 12th time but they are still searching for their first championship, having finished as runner-up in 2007 and again in 2008.

Then in the other 4A semifinal, set for 5:30 p.m. CT Friday, the Panthers of Oswego takes on the Huskies of Oak Park (Oak Park-River Forest).

Oswego comes in at 36-2 overall, and the Panthers have reached the “State Series” for the second straight season, having finished third in last season’s 4A tournament. Oak Park-River Forest (29-8) is in the “State Series” for the first time since 2023 and is seeking its first title since winning back-to-back 4A crowns in 2016-17.

Friday’s 4A semifinal losers play at 2 p.m. CT Saturday for third place, while the 4A semifinal winners square off for the championship at 4:30 p.m.
