When the Colts host the Packers for a joint practice on Thursday ahead of their preseason clash later in the week, Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love won’t be on the field.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Love is undergoing a thumb operation on his non-throwing left hand to resolve a ligament issue. The hope is he’ll be back in time for the start of the regular season.
But for now, it will be Malik Willis under center when the Packers come to Grand Park. The Colts are all too familiar with Willis after he led Green Bay to a 16-10 win over Indianapolis last season in just his fourth career start.
“We didn’t make the plays we were supposed to make and it cost us,” cornerback Kenny Moore II said after the Week 2 loss.
The main issue for the defense wasn’t Willis’ passing, but how he changed the game with his legs. The Packers rushed for 261 yards as a team on an uncharacteristically poor run defense.
After some significant changes on the defensive side of the ball, the Colts will look to somewhat redeem themselves by getting back at Willis during practice and the subsequent preseason game.
