Cleveland Browns GM Andrew Berry likely knows the blowback he’d face if he kept four quarterbacks on his roster after training camp breaks and the preseason concludes.
The Ringer’s Diante Lee believes that will lead to lead to Cleveland cutting Tyler Huntley and doing the same for Kenny Pickett if the front office can’t find a return.
Pickett was acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles using Dorian Thompson-Robinson and a fifth-round pick, while Huntley was signed to have another playable preseason body amidst injuries to Pickett and Dillon Gabriel.
Lee believes both players, Gabriel, and even Shedeur Sanders, who’s coming off the best rookie quarterback performance of the preseason’s first week, need to worry about their place on the roster.
Pickett and Huntley’s outlooks were given the bleakest outlooks.
“True answers about the race for the QB2 and QB3 jobs won’t come until Pickett gets more work after missing part of camp with a hamstring injury. If Pickett continues to be held out of preseason games and 11-on-11 drills in practice, it’ll be tough to predict what this team will do with its final 53-man roster. The Athletic’s Browns beat writer, Zac Jackson, hasn’t ruled out that four quarterbacks make the roster (presuming Tyler Huntley is just here as a camp arm), but it’s hard to imagine this team sacrificing depth at another position for the sake of keeping Pickett around,” Lee wrote.
“Even though the pecking order hasn’t changed, everyone but Flacco has to be nervous about their status over the next couple of weeks.”
Ultimately, Lee dished blame to Berry, head coach Kevin Stefanski, and owner Jimmy Haslam for bungling the QB battle so badly.
Maybe it’s a play for a 2026 draft arm. Arch Manning is likely off the table, but Drew Allar seems fired up about the idea of being a Brown.
Either way, there seems to be at least a little bit of clarity coming for the position.
