Shane Beamer divulges how internal competition is affecting South Carolina Gamecocks football's WR room image

South Carolina head football coach Shane Beamer doesn't need to push his receiving corps much to perform better; the internal competition in the WR room does that for him.

During his sit-down with Greg McElroy, Beamer dished out how the freshman players and the sophomore players automatically "elevate their game" to have the edge against the other group.

"We had five freshman receivers. They graduated high school early and went through spring practice. All of them were highly recruited and highly touted, and rightfully so. They’ve made progress and will make us better," Beamer told McElroy.

"And then their arrivals has really made Nyck Harbor and Jared Brown and Mazeo [Bennett Jr.] and our other receivers really have to elevate their games with the arrival of these freshmen receivers."

Beamer's verdict indicates the work going on behind the curtains in South Carolina's WR room.

"They’re a talented group of guys, and overall, were deeper at wide receiver. No question about it. There’s a lot of competition, because you’re exactly right, really. … Nyck Harbor and these other guys, they’ve really improved their ability to get open, but even more so, their run after the catch ability, as well where they can catch a pass, they can break a tackle and they can help us create even more explosive plays," Beamer continued.

A flourishing receiving corps is exactly what QB LaNorris Sellers needs to deliver on his expectations of being a top 5 QB in college football, and potentially lead the Gamecocks to the CFP.

The Gamecocks look equipped enough to make a comeback after last year's snub from the college football playoff.

South Carolina opens its season at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta against Virginia Tech on Sunday, Aug. 30.
