The Atlanta Falcons are making sure Michael Penix Jr. stays upright this season.

On Monday morning, the team agreed to a two-year, $30 million extension with veteran offensive tackle Kaleb McGary — a move that shores up the offensive line for their potential quarterback of the future. It’s a big investment in continuity for a unit that has seen its share of ups and downs in recent years.

McGary, a 2019 first-round pick out of Washington, has started 79 games over the past six seasons in Atlanta. The 29-year-old was heading into a contract year, but told reporters two weeks ago he wasn’t stressing over the situation.

“You’ll never find somebody more willing to be paid in all your life, trust me,” McGary said. “But I’m not really worried about it. I’m focused on the season. If I don’t do my job well enough, then there’s not much reason to worry about anything else.”

Now, McGary enters the season locked in as the blindside protector for Penix, who’s expected to take over as the full-time starter. It’s a big year for both players — and for a Falcons offense that’s hoping to turn the corner.

McGary gives Atlanta a proven, physical presence up front — someone who’s already built chemistry with the rest of the line. His return helps solidify one of the team’s most important position groups heading into the season. For a young quarterback like Penix, that kind of stability could make all the difference.
