The Atlanta Falcons have been searching for a quarterback who can bring it all together since Matt Ryan. With Michael Penix Jr. stepping in, that wait might finally be over.
Penix was brought in to take the Atlanta Falcons offense to another level. Now just a few weeks into training camp, he is doing more than turning heads. He is earning trust where it matters the most come Sunday’s and that's with the big men up front.
The former Washington standout has impressed teammates and coaches with how quickly he has taken command of the offense. But it is the offensive line that may be buying in the fastest. The group is starting to adjust to Penix’s rhythm and feel in the pocket, and the chemistry is building fast.
"The biggest thing as an offensive lineman is understanding the depth of the pocket and kind of where he's going to be," Falcons right guard Chris Lindstrom said. "That only comes with reps. There's a certain feeling you have."
Penix has shown composure under pressure and a quick release that allows the line to settle in and keep plays alive. For a second year quarterback stepping into a huddle filled with veterans, that kind of presence goes a long way and builds rapport going into this season as QB1.
The Falcons have built a dangerous offense on paper. With Bijan Robinson, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts already in place, all they have needed is a quarterback who can tie it together. Penix is making a real case that he is that missing piece.
The former Heisman runner-up has the arm. He has the vision. And now he has the confidence of the players who protect him every snap.
If this progress continues, Atlanta may not just have its quarterback of the future. It may have one of the most complete offenses in the NFC.
