Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton were both victorious during their respective quarter-final matches at the Canadian Open on Tuesday night (August 5).

Second seed, Fritz, beat Andrey Rublev (6) 6-3 7-6 (7-4), while Shelton defeated recently crowned Washington Open champion, Alex de Minaur (9), 6-3 6-4.

The pair of victories by the two American stars mean they will now face off against one another in the semi-finals on Wednesday night (August 6).

This guarantees at least one American will play in the final in Toronto, against the winner of the other last four clash between top seed Alexander Zverev and Karen Khachanov (11).

The upcoming meeting between Fritz and Shelton is a real rarity in the American tennis game.

The contest will mark the first semi-final match between two American players at an ATP Masters 1000 tournament since 2010, when Mardy Fish defeated Andy Roddick at the Cincinnati Open.

Shelton looking forward to the match-up with Fritz

For Shelton, his win over de Minaur means he will play in his first Masters 1000 semi-final, and he is looking forward to taking on Fritz.

"He's a big-match player," the 22-year-old said post-match. "He's been carrying the flag for the United States in the big tournaments as of late. He's clutch, serves well. We're great friends."

"It's a match that I'm really excited about."

Shelton lost the only meeting between the American pair two years ago at Indian Wells, as Fritz fought back to win 4-6 6-4 6-3.

Fritz is looking to win the second Masters 1000 title of his career after winning in Indian Wells three years ago.

The 27-year-old will fancy his chances of going all the way in Toronto as his gruelling Round of 16 win over Jiri Lehecka demonstrated he will be very tough to take down at this current moment.

All four semi-finalists will view this event as a great opportunity to win a respectable title and make a statement in the men's game, as top ranked stars, Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic chose to skip the tournament.

Sinner and Alcaraz will return to the court at the upcoming Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati, but Djokovic will not be competing.
