Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has spoken on the possibility of matches taking place on foreign soil.

There has been some clamour in recent years for English top flight matches to be held across the globe, with Masters' predecessor, Richard Scudamore, and Liverpool chairman Tom Werner among those being open to the possibility.

La Liga and Serie A are currently working to stage a domestic league game abroad in the forthcoming season, with the two league's awaiting authorisation from FIFA and UEFA.

Should both league's have their wishes granted, Barcelona and Villarreal will meet in Miami this December, while AC Milan will take on Como in Perth next February.

However, Masters insists the Premier League are not influenced with what La Liga and Serie A are attempting, suggesting that fans should not expect overseas Premier League games to be authorised.

"I don't think it changes the Premier League's view on this at all, we don't have any plans to play matches abroad," Masters said in an interview with BBC Sport.

"It's not anywhere near my in-tray and it's not a debate around our table," he added.

Masters explained that talk of staging an additional and 39th Premier League game abroad during Scudamore's reign stemmed from the differing landscape at that time.

"The Premier League flirted with this (staging overseas matches) over a decade ago, and the reason was to grow the league internationally and we were able to do this through different means - digital means, broadcast partners, concepts like the summer series in the US."

The Premier League boss then effectively called the possibility of overseas games dead for now due to the league's recent growth levels.

"The necessity that was driving that concept (foreign Premier League fixtures) has dissipated."

While Masters' comments demonstrate the Premier League's willingness to not stage matches on foreign grounds, the concept will continue to be raised as long as high sums of money get floated within the footballing landscape.
