Who is Hayden Buchanan? St George Illawarra rookie to make NRL debut image

The Gerringong Lions continue to shape the NRL’s future, this time through Hayden Buchanan, who will make his debut for St George Illawarra in Saturday’s derby against Cronulla at Kogarah.

Buchanan, just 19, has been elevated to the starting side by coach Shane Flanagan after Mat Feagai was ruled out with a groin injury.

The Steelers junior joins a growing list of Gerringong products making waves in 2025, following the debuts of Dylan Egan and Hamish Stewart earlier this year.

A strong NSW Cup season earns its reward

Buchanan had been named among the reserves for the first time last week in the Dragons’ upset win over Canberra. His call-up comes after a standout Knock-On Effect NSW Cup campaign, which has clearly impressed Flanagan enough to hand him a shot on the big stage.

Egan’s year was cut short with an ACL injury in May, but Stewart will also feature against the Sharks, while another Gerringong product, Ashton Ward, has now played three matches for South Sydney.

Buchanan’s debut marks the eighth Gerringong local to play first grade this season, with the likes of Tyran Wishart, Jackson Ford, Reuben Garrick and Kyle McCarthy already established at NRL level.

It’s another bright sign for the Dragons, who announced this week that Shane Flanagan has extended his contract through to the end of the 2028 season.

“Shane has played a critical role in setting the foundation for where this club is heading,” said CEO Tim Watsford. “He’s re-instilled belief in our playing group, coaches and supporters together with reiterating the privilege of wearing the Red V.”

St George Illawarra’s slim finals hopes remain alive, but they’ll need to win all five remaining games.
