A local derby between the Sharks and Dragons is slated for Thursday night football in Cronulla, with both teams separated by just two-points on the premiership ladder.

Coming off back-to-back double-digit losses, Sharks coach Craig Fitzgibbon fronted the media and spoke to the significance of the clash.

"Rivalries and derby’s make up the NRL, everyone loves watching them," he said

"There’s no given record for anyone in the NRL. Every time we play a team it’s a different set of circumstances."

Given how strong the dislike is between both clubs, Fitzgibbon was surprised that the NRL didn't elect to put the game in a more featured time slot.

"As a club and a team, everyone craves to be on the highlight time," he said.

"Being a local derby, and rivals, it doesn’t matter where the teams are, it's going to be a hard game."

Despite playing the first game of a round depleted from byes, the mood in the Shire will be positive as one of their favourite sons, back-rower Briton Nikora, celebrates his 150th NRL match.

"He’s obviously a terrific player, you don’t have to be a Sharks fan to appreciate what Briton Nikora’s about," said Fitzgibbon

"[He's a] man of few words but he’s got a real presence and the players respect him enormously.

"[If] you watch enough footy you can know what Briton Nikora’s about so we expect him to bring that tomorrow."

When asked to speak to the media about the occasion, Nikora was pleased with how much he's already achieved in his professional career.

“It’s a big milestone for me and my family," he said.

“When I look back at it I’m quite proud of myself and everybody that’s got me here."
