Andrew Johns slams handling of Daly Cherry-Evans' contract negotiations image

Rugby league Immortal Andrew Johns has called out the ongoing saga involving Daly Cherry-Evans contract negotiations in what is likely the former Maroons captains final NRL deal.

On a recent episode of Wide World of Sports' Immortal Behaviour, Johns seemed perplexed by the way in which the situation has been handled by the clubs in the race for Cherry-Evans' signature, as well as the veteran halfback himself.

"Looking back, it was just an absolute joke the way it happened," he said.

"He was on 100% Footy and announced it there and they [Manly] put a counter offer in while he was on TV.

"It was just bizarre, it was absolutely weird."

It was confirmed on Tuesday when State of Origin Game II teams were announced that Cherry-Evans would no longer be part of the Queensland squad.

He is now the first Maroons captain since Trevor Gillmeister in 1996 to be axed mid-series, narrowing his focus to the rest of the season with the Sea Eagles.

Johns proposed that the 36-year-old should come out and make a decision on his future now that his Origin career is likely over.

"Now that Origin is out of the way, he's got to come out and say where he's going," said Johns.

"I think it should be announced soon."

The 342-game NRL veteran has been heavily linked with a move across town to Sydney rivals the Roosters.

The Roosters already have a messy halves situation with Sam Walker, Hugo Savala, Sandon Smith and Toby Rodwell all vying for first grade jerseys.

Johns questions whether making a play at Cherry-Evans is the right move for what the club is building towards.

"I know they had great success when they got Cooper Cronk there, but it was a different team, it was stacked with stars," he said.

"This team is a young team on the way up. They have Sammy Walker playing first grade this week back from an ACL and they have got Hugo Savala, who I think is a great foil for Sam Walker.

"Then you've got Sandon Smith, who has been incredible - and down below, you've got a young guy called Toby Rodwell, who is exceptional and he'll be playing in the U19s for NSW Thursday night - he's close to playing first grade.

"You've got four of these young guys - do you think Hugo, Sandon and Toby are going to want to sit behind for two years while Daly is there?

"I just really don't know how it's gonna work."
