Each player on the Las Vegas Aces will make some extra cash this year — and no, it's not bonuses for winning the 2023 WNBA championship.

The city of Las Vegas has decided to sponsor each of the Aces' players for the 2024 season. This includes two-time MVP A'ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum, and rookies Dyaisha Fair and Kate Martin.

Leaders of the city of Las Vegas announced the deal in the Aces locker room on Friday, May 17.

The Sporting News breaks down everything to know about the Aces' sponsorship with the city.

Las Vegas Aces sponsorship, explained

The Las Vegas Aces are getting a unique sponsorship for the 2024 season.

Typically these deals come from consumer product companies such as Nike or State Farm. And those deals are often straightforward — appear in a commercial, wear sponsored clothing, drink sponsored drinks or just flaunt the product in some way, shape or form.

That's not the case here, and it partially has to do with it technically being a sponsorship and not an endorsement.

The city of Las Vegas is giving $100,000 to each Las Vegas Aces player. That's a total of $1.2 million for the 2024 season. As mentioned, there's usually an expected return for giving money in such a manner. All the players are asked to do is "just play."

"We want you to keep repping Las Vegas and if you get the three-peat, that'll be icing on the cake," they were told.

Las Vegas leaders and members of the LVCVA visited the Aces on Friday to announce the deal.

What is the LVCVA?

The LVCVA stands for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. The organization is designed to promote the city of Las Vegas and welcome travel and tourism.

Las Vegas continues to be one of the most popular travel destinations in the United States, and the LVCVA aims to retain that status.

The city, although popular, didn't have any major professional sports team until 2016 when the Golden Knights joined the NHL. Two years later, the WNBA's San Antonio Stars became the Las Vegas Aces.

The Aces have been the city's most successful sports team, winning back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023. City leaders decided to sponsor the team's players for the 2024 season as they aim for a three-peat.

How many championships do the Aces have?

The Las Vegas Aces have two championships since debuting in the WNBA in 1997. They came in the 2022 and 2023 seasons, so the Aces have the opportunity to three-peat in the 2024 season.

The Aces originally joined the WNBA as the Utah Starzz in 1997 before moving to San Antonio from 2003-17. They were one of the original eight teams in the WNBA. The league now has 12 teams.

Six WNBA teams have more titles than the Aces.
