“I was like oh this girl thinks she’s gonna come here and rule the world…and there she did came right in and ruled the world…I just remember we had that summer before and she was doing things that I had never seen before.” pic.twitter.com/l6ELDnqlCK
The pair, who became close during their time together at Iowa, told Sue Bird on her "Bird's Eye View" podcast that she had heard about Clark before she officially enrolled at the university.
Clark was already "a big name in Iowa" when she came to the university for visits, Martin said. "And so I had heard about this Caitlin Clark and I was like watching videos of her just like having like 40 points like averaging a million in high school. And I was like, oh this girl thinks she's gonna come here and rule the world, you know, like whatever," she continued.
And then, well, we all know what happened. "And there she did came in right away and ruled the world. And I was like, all right, here we go," she added.
Martin also said Clark displayed a confidence that she didn't see in any other freshmen and the team soon realized "she was going to be outstanding."
Though the pair now play on the Indiana Fever and Golden State Valkyries, they're still good friends. Their teams will face one another for the first time on Friday, June 19.
