After establishing herself as one of the top hurdlers in high school track history, Carlsbad senior Morgan Herbst has been named Gatorade's California Track & Field Athlete of the Year.
For starters, the Arkansas signee set a state record in the 300-meter hurdles at the state meet with a time of 39.64 seconds, which is No. 2 ever in national high school track history. Herbst's time of 55.78 in the 400-meter hurdles was also a state record, best in the country in 2025, and fifth all time nationally. To top it off, she even won gold in the CIF-San Diego Section championships in the 100-meter dash (no hurdles).
Morgan's twin sister Makenna is also among the nation's top track athletes and will join her at Arkansas.
Wow. These Herbst sisters from Carlsbad. Less than 30 minutes after twin Makenna just missed state record in 800, Morgan Herbst breaks own state record, runs second fastest 300 hurdles in history at 39.64!!! pic.twitter.com/OrmSJlLYth
