For the second time in one school year, Jane Hedengren has been Gatorade's National Player of the Year in two sports.
In the fall, the Timpview (Provo, UT) senior was named National Cross Country Player of the Year, and this week she was announced the National Track & Field Athlete of the Year as well.
Hedengren set new national high school records with substantial room to spare this year in the 3000m (8:40.03), 2-mile (9:17.75), and 5000m (14:57.93).
Gatorade's press release included the following quote from Rich Gonzalez, editor at PrepCalTrack.com:
“Jane Hedengren delivered the multi-generational type of season we’ve never seen before and might never see again. Pure domination in the distance events and a ridiculous re-writing of the record books at multiple distances. The only thing more amazing than her repeated displays of mind-boggling stamina was her sheer grace in doing so, never flashing any sign of physical duress during her parade of record assaults. Her senior year resume was truly remarkable.”
In the fall she will begin her collegiate career at BYU, where her father John was an All-American distance runner.
