One last high school softball championship game in Alabama takes place Friday afternoon.

Helena has made it through the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A state softball bracket unscathed. Now, the Huskies seek to close things out as they face Saraland for the 6A title in Oxford.

Saraland made it to the championship round by defeating Athens earlier on Friday, 6-1, as pitcher Myleigh Dobbins threw a two-hitter, striking out three. Mallory Brown went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and Gracie Dees went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored.

Now, the Spartans will have to beat Helena twice to win state.

The two teams played earlier in the winner’s bracket final, with Helena claiming a 3-2 win as Hayden Traywick’s RBI single in the bottom of the fifth broke a 2-all score. Also in the win for the Huskies, Lily Sanderson went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, and pitcher Marlee Parsons struck out three in a complete-game outing.

In Helena’s previous game in the bracket, the Huskies outlasted Hartselle, 3-2, in 11 innings on Carrington Schiefer’s walk-off bases-loaded RBI single in the bottom of the 11th.

Orange Beach makes it five straight titles

Thursday night, in the Alabama 4A state softball championship, Orange Beach claimed its fifth straight championship with a 9-2 win against Curry. The Makos’ latest title tied an AHSAA state record for the most consecutive softball championships, tying Pisgah, which won five straight from 2001-05.

Orange Beach broke a 2-all score with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, starting with a steal of home plate by Arkansas commit Katie King - who scored all the way from first place. King was also named the tournament’s MVP as she batted .642 (9-for-14) with a home run, two doubles, three RBIs and five runs scored.

Senior KG Favors turned in a complete-game performance, while two other seniors - Kaitlynn Robertson and Auburn signee Daigle Wilson - each had hits and another senior, Justine Henderson, had one of the Makos’ runs.

Orange Beach finished the season 46-2.
