A highly anticipated Class 7A final is the final game of a quadruple header of high school championship softball in Mississippi on Wednesday.
But before that, three state titles could be decided.
On the second day of the Mississippi High School Activities Association high school softball championship, there will be three Game 2 series on tap. All series this week will be held on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.
Class 3A begins things at 11 a.m. as Enterprise-Clarke takes on Booneville. Enterprise-Clarke (29-11) took the opening game on Tuesday, 1-0 in eight innings as Lenix Addkison scored the lone run for the Bulldogs in the top half of the eighth on a wild pitch.
Wednesday’s second game is the Class 6A final between Neshoba Central and George County. George County (34-2) took the opening game Tuesday, 4-1, as Paisley Pipkins and Blakely Slay each had two hits with an RBI, with Pipkins hitting a home run.
Then in the 5A final, East Central of Moss Point seeks to close things out against Lafayette of Oxford. East Central won Game 1 on Tuesday, 10-3, pounding out 12 hits in the process.
Leading the charge for the Hornets (30-7) was Valerie Merrill, who went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs. Abbie Huff tripled and had three RBIs as well. Despite the loss, Mabry Eason had two hits, including a homer, and two RBIs for Lafayette (27-9).
Finally on Wednesday, the opening game of the Class 7A championship series takes place, as Hernando faces Northwest Rankin in a matchup of two of the top teams not only in Mississippi but the entire country.
Hernando comes in at 33-2 overall, while Northwest Rankin is 30-4. It’s also a matchup of two evenly matched teams, with Hernando’s Tigers scoring 297 runs while allowing 65 on the season, and Northwest Rankin’s Cougars have scored 283 runs while allowing 76.
The two teams played earlier this season on March 11, with Hernando claiming a 5-2 win. Last season, both teams faced off in the 7A finals, with Northwest Rankin sweeping both games en route to finishing with a perfect 34-0 season and a state title.
Championship series games continue through Saturday at USM.
