Assumption (Louisville, Ky.) had previously won a Kentucky state softball championship, but that was 40 years ago in slow-pitch.
Now, the Rockets can claim a fast-pitch championship.
Behind a strong pitching performance from Lauren Satterly, Assumption defeated defending state champion Henderson County, 4-2, to win the Kentucky High School Athletic Association state softball championship Saturday in Lexington at the University of Kentucky.
The Rockets won a state slow-pitch title in 1985.
Assumption broke a 1-all score Saturday with a run in the top of the third on an RBI single from Jaelynn Oaks that brought in Satterly. It remained 2-1 until the top of the seventh when the Rockets got insurance on a two-run single off the bat of Grace Sander.
Henderson County did score a run in the bottom of the seventh and had runners on second and third with one out. But Satterly retired the next two batters to nail down the Rockets' title.
Satterly gave up two earned runs on five hits and struck out one. She also improved her record this season to 18-1.
Oaks went 2-for-3 and was the only Rocket with multiple hits, as Assumption finished with six hits.
Assumption took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI fielder's choice from Lauren Campisano. The Colonels tied the score in the bottom half of the inning as Lilly Bennett doubled in a run.
Bennett went 2-for-3 and drove in both runs for Henderson County, also adding an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.
