Sometimes in sports, American history plays a big role in rivalries. That much is true with Missouri vs. Kansas, as the two states have been rivals since the dawn of the Civil War. The Tigers and Jayhawks will do battle — only on the field, of course — in Week 2 of the 2025 college football season.

The rivalry itself is called the "Border War," aptly named considering the conflict between the two states during the Bleeding Kansas period. Mizzou leads the all-time series 57-54-9, and also won the last team these programs met back in 2011.

The Jayhawks would like nothing more than to go into enemy territory in early September and blast their rivals to smithereens. The Tigers will do what Missouri natives tried to do 162 years ago: defend their home and kick some you-know-what in the process.

Eli Drinkwitz will be looking to lead Mizzou to a third consecutive campaign of double-digit wins. The Tigers lost a lot of talent to the NFL, but the program also enjoyed the No. 7 transfer portal class in the nation. Drinkwitz's squad — which includes running back Ahmad Hardy and wideouts Kevin Coleman Jr. and Xavier Loyd — seems ready to reload and go back to battle, with an SEC title and a playoff berth in its sights.

Quarterback Jalon Daniels serves as the main catalyst for the Jayhawks, who had the seventh-best offense in the Big 12 Conference last season. Kansas also lost plenty of difference-makers in the offseason, but Daniel Hishaw Jr. has elite upside at running back and Alabama transfer Emmanuel Henderson Jr. could be a breakout wide receiver.
