The top-ranked American, seeded fifth at Wimbledon, has been through the wringer in the first week of the grass-court major but continued to fight on. He defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-4, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 in the third round on Friday.
Thompson, meanwhile, bounced back from a spate of injuries for a breakthrough run at Wimbledon. The Australian player reached the Round of 16 at the grand slam for the first time in nine appearance as he defeated Luciano Darderi 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the third round.
The twp players are an even 1-1 in the head-to-head series, but Thomspon won their only meeting on grass, at Queen's ATP event in 2024.
