Alcaraz wins his fifth Grand Slam title and retains the French Open. I'm not entirely sure how he did it from two sets and three championship points down. Absurd beyond words. When did this match even start? A final for the ages. Utterly astonishing. Alcaraz goes up to this box to embrace his team. Incredible scenes. Sinner is sitting courtside and looks empty. It all defies description. Hopefully a million-word live blog was adequate. I'm off for a drink.

Alcaraz with a second serve to look at now. He's into the rally, pokes and prods and Sinner goes long! FIVE-NIL! And he shells another. Alcaraz serving with a 6-0 lead. Surely, even in this absurd match there's no way back. Surely not from 7-0 as Sinner gets the balls. That's a fine serve and Alcaraz has to net. The first step up the mountain.?

Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 6-6 Carlos Alcaraz*

Alcaraz to the net, impregnable at the net under a barrage 15-0. Sinner duly hits back, of course he does. More frenzied action, Alcaraz into the net and his lob is long. Sinner, not for the first time, is two points from the title. Sinner long, 30-30. Sensational shot from the back of the court from Alcaraz before a backhand winner. 40-30. Oh, that's absurd, Janni Sinner! A magnificent return kisses the line. Alcaraz holds his nerve to get to advantage. HAHAHAHAHA, MATE! To send us to the championship tie-break, Alcaraz hits a cross-court, backhand winner that might just be the best shot of the whole, damn thing.

*Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-7(3-7) 6-5 Carlos Alcaraz

The crowd now seem to be backing Sinner. Do these masochists simply never want this to end? Some big serves get the Italian a handy lead but he misses a forehand at it's 40-30. Second serve, Alcaraz gets a backhand in play and Sinner is wildly off target. Deuce. A punishing rally now, both men in the red. Sinner stays calm amid a net cord and fires a monstrous forehand winner.  Oh, a forehand return from the gods by Alcaraz, who is into the net to polish off the point. Sinner stands firm for another advantage. He passes Alcaraz again and, at the very least, will have a tiebreak to win the title. Good heavens.

Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 5-5 Carlos Alcaraz* – BREAK

Alcaraz into the point but smears his forehand long. How are the nerves? Second serve and Sinner whips a stupendous backhand return! 0-30. That's more like it from Alcaraz, who whips a trademark forehand and Sinner goes long. Now Alcaraz goes to the drop shot, BUT SINNER GETS THERE FOR TWO BREAK-BACK POINTS AND THE CROWD ARE GOING BANANAS! A let. A fault. Second serve. Sinner returns, Alcaraz into the net! WHAT SORT OF A THING IS HAPPENING HERE?!?!?!

*Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 4-5 Carlos Alcaraz

Sinner crashes a forehand winner cross-court. He wants to make Alcaraz win this, no least because he knows what a caper that can be. The champion booms an authoritative forehand of his own. 30-15. Sinner keeps his foot down, Alcaraz goes long and he will serve for the championship as the game clock ticks past five hours.

Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 3-5 Carlos Alcaraz*

Jannik Sinner* 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 3-4 Carlos Alcaraz

Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 2-4 Carlos Alcaraz*

Bravura stuff from A;lcaraz, who sprawls out on the court to make a superb volley. Sinner levels and and then completes a stunning backhand pass! It's his turn to roar. Back comes Alcaraz and he gets game point with a drop shot. Sinner through that serve was out. He might have a point but the do their line-calling old school at Roland-Garros. Alcaraz closes out the game and Sinner clatters a ball away in frustration.

Jannik Sinner* 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 2-3 Carlos Alcaraz

We're ticking towards five hours. If you think this elite sports lark is all luxury, Alcaraz was just gargling pickle juice to combat cramps. He has half an opening here at 30-30. Sinner slams the door. Game point. He gets the job done, just at the point where this becomes the longest Roland-Garros final of all time at four hours and 42 minutes. Another way of looking at this is it's about an hour since Sinner had three championship points.

Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 1-3 Carlos Alcaraz*

Behave yourself, Carlos. Consecutive drop-shot winners for 30-15. Sinner gets himself in the game and Alcaraz yahoos a wild forehand wide to slip to 30-30. Time to take a breath, perhaps? These forehands are locked in, though, and Sinner is forced to go long. The Italian vents some frustration. He'll get a look at a second serve. He thrashed a backhand return winner. That'll do. Deuce. Sinner drops one to Alcaraz's toes on the baseline and he has to go wide. Break point...repelled with a booking forehand. A slower second serve outfoxed Sinner brilliantly there. Alcaraz goes down the T but is wide. Another drop shot for advantage! This guy is a joke. Nevertheless, Sinner forces it back to deuce and a double fault means another break point!

Alcaraz drives him back with the backhand and Sinner goes wide. Now he misses a return and launches his racquet. Advantage Alcaraz. He gets it done. HUUUUUGE hold.

*Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 1-2 Carlos Alcaraz

Sinner gets on the board first but then gets a late but correct call as he goes wide in the next rally. He regroups for 30-15 and Alcaraz overcooks a forehand. He just battering all of them at this point, so it will happen from time to time. Sinner closes out the game, the first he has won since he was one game from the title. He's a little further away now.

Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 0-2 Carlos Alcaraz*

Sinner was walking gingerly after failing to get to repel that drop shot. Alcaraz has the momentum of a runaway train and he's 2-0 up in the blink of an eye. Sinner has to muster something to hold here.

*Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 0-1 Carlos Alcaraz – BREAK

Sinner hooks wide and Alcaraz is ahead in the tie-break. He stops the rot with a smash to make it 3-4 going onto the Alcaraz serve. Sinner wildly long on a second serve return. 5-3. "That last point is what pressure looks like," says two-time French Open champion Jim Courier on commentary. Sinner long again and it's bedlam on Philippe-Chatrier. Alcaraz has three set points... and batters the first of those into open court! We're going the distance. Are you not entetained?!?!

Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-6 (2-3) Carlos Alcaraz – TIE-BREAK

Mini-break for Sinner out of the blocks. Boy he'd love a flawless serve here. It's a fault. They rally and Alcaraz goes long on the backhand. 2-0 Sinner. They're both hitting the ball with such blistering power and Alcaraz whips a superb forehand past his man to get the mini-break back. Well, that's a pretty good time for an ace. 2-2. And another, clean off the line. What a time to produce your two best serves of the day. Over to you, Yannick.

Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-6 Carlos Alcaraz

A nice bit of serve-volley gets Sinner to 30-0. Second serve, Alcaraz returns and the world No. 1 nets raggedly. He forces Alcaraz to go wide and has the respite of two game points. The first is brutally ripped away by a fully loaded Alcaraz forehand. He nets in the next rally. If Sinner wins the breaker, he will be champion. But he's missed out on three championship points and served for the title. And Alcaraz is still there, the lunatic.

Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 5-6 Carlos Alcaraz*

Sinner simultaneously finds himself on the brink of glory and under seige as Alcaraz races into 40-0 advantage with crowd in the palm of his hand. Where has he found these gears? It's a love hold and Sinner must hold to force a tie-break.

*Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 5-5 Carlos Alcaraz – BREAK

That's six points in a row from th reigning champion, who is playing his best tennis on the brink of defeat. Tireless defence from Alcaraz, who forces an awkward volley upon Sinner. He makes it. A nerveless shot. Another baseline rally with Alcaraz swinging for the fences and going 15-30! And he prevails in this rally too. The crowd on their feat to salute the champion's herculean defiance. Oof, a first serve that's waaay long. Second kicks up from the box and Sinner's backhand is long. Two down, one to go...for now. Fine first serve from Alcaraz this time, Sinner goes all in behind a forehand but he's forced to net. Jannik Sinner* 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 5-3 Carlos Alcaraz

Fine opening point from Alcaraz, who is going to go down swinging. He's too long with a backhand in the next rally, though, before Sinner gets to 30-15. Alcaraz is driven back by a 127 mph serve and an uncompromising forehand. He's playing with some authority now. Alcaraz continues to scrap behind the baseline but nets a backhand and Sinner is just a game away.

Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 4-3 Carlos Alcaraz* – BREAK

Alcaraz hooks a backhand wide before Sinner finds a delightful drop-shot winner. 0-30 feels big at a time when Sinner looks like he's finding the points easier to win. Alcaraz forces it and goes long. Three break points in the seventh game of the fourth set. Alcaraz would have loved a first serve to land, it doesn't. His second is out to the backhand side, decent enough, but then he goes wide! Sinner is a break up and two games away from the title.

*Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 3-3 Carlos Alcaraz

A couple of straightforward points get Sinner to 30-0. Alcaraz looking to make a dent, only to net a cross-court forehand. The precedes an unfussy hold to love.

Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 2-3 Carlos Alcaraz*

Tidier service game for Alcaraz as the shadows lengthen across Court Philippe-Chatrier. A serve dies on the line and he moves to 40-15, although he follows that with a double fault. Feast follows famine as he spears an unreturnable out to the backhand side.

Jannik Sinner* 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 2-2 Carlos Alcaraz

This match is ticking towards four hours and the sight of both men in that 21 shot rally was something to behind. Sinner put away the smash for 30-0. He goes futher ahead before Alcaraz denies him another love hold. All those little psychological battles feel increasingly important. A brutal Alcaraz passing shot that Sinner can only deflect out. 40-30 and now a second serve. Alcaraz puts the backhand in play from deep, gets into the rally, but Sinner unloads a phenomenal forehand and Alcaraz's racquet goes flying.

Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 1-2 Carlos Alcaraz*

Sinner looks to take that momentum into this game and Alcaraz produces a timely forehand winner for 15-15. Glorious from Sinner on the next point - forehand right into the corner! Big rally up next but Sinner yields, netting a slightly tired forehand. He's back on it in a flash, though, whipping a forehand and forcing Alcaraz into the net to force break point. Oooh, Alcaraz gets a backhand right on the line. Luck, meet judgment. Sinner goes long and Alcaraz has advantage. Sinner's backhand return is long, Alcaraz yells "VAMOS!" again and the bulk of the crowd concur.

*Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 1-1 Carlos Alcaraz

Sinner enjoying serving with new balls as Alcaraz plonks a return out for 40-0. The world No. 1 puts the next point away for the most straightforward service game of the entire contest.

Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 0-1 Carlos Alcaraz*

Majestic start to the fourth set as Sinner wins a 16-shot rally against the serve. Ohhh, almost a double fault but Alcaraz gets away with a let, second service. Sinner goes long... and again. 30-15. Alcaraz doesn't want a repeat of the first game of the previous set, even though plenrty went right after that. He has game point but his backhand down the line is just wide. Sinner grits his teeth and pummels his way through a rally to deuce. His second service return is long after Alcaraz puts some heat on it into the body. He goes big down the T next up to get out of the game.

Jannik Sinner* 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 Carlos Alcaraz – BREAK: ALCARAZ WINS THE THIRD SET!

Sinner goes behind serving to stay in the set, then hits a volley into the net cord and Alcaraz nails the passing shot! 0-30. The chanpion is all over the net rally too, digging deep, shifting Sinner around and hitting the winner for three set points! Sinner has not lost a set of Grand Slam tennis since the fourth round of the Australian Open in January. A serve into the set isn't ideal. He looks to take control of the next point on the forehand but Alcaraz is having none of it! We're going into set four.

Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-5 Carlos Alcaraz* – BREAK

Alcaraz, serving for the set, comes in behind a drop shot and some fine defence from Sinner is eventually penetrated. A backhand down the line levels things up. Now Sinner forces his foe to go long. 15-30 and palpable tension. Alcaraz hangs in behind a second serve to win the next point. Sinner into the net and Alcaraz long with the lob to cough up set point. Huge moment in this final. Alcaraz looks for the serve down the T but is wide. The second serve is a decent one but Sinner produces a magical forehand from the back of the court and Alcaraz has to net! We're back on serve!

Jannik Sinner* 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 3-5 Carlos Alcaraz

Sinner races to 30-0 and now here are three game points. The wobble looks to have steadied and he's going to make Alcaraz earn this set. Some brutal trading from the back of the court sees Sinner go long, though. Not need to worry, though, as the Italian hammers down an ace.

Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 2-5 Carlos Alcaraz*

Alcaraz forces Sinner to net a service return, but the Italian levels matters and then benefits from a double fault to move to 15-30. That's Alcaraz's third double of the match. Sinner hasn't served any and has a look at another second serve here. Alcaraz creams one down the line, lovely stuff. Second serv,e but Sinner goes long and Alcaraz is able to make an important hold from there. At two sets down, I guess they're all important holds.

Jannik Sinner* 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 2-4 Carlos Alcaraz

Sinner remains in a dominant position overall but could do with stopping the rot here. He unfussily moves to 30-0 and then Alcaraz goes long despite getting into a rally on the back of a second serve. Sinner can't hold to love as he nets a forehand. Alcaraz would still like to be reading these second serves a little better, though, and Sinner gets out of the game.

Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 1-4 Carlos Alcaraz*

Sinner gets ahead in this one but Alcaraz hits a superb forehand winner and then takes a long, hard look at his opponent after taking a 30-15 lead. Sinner wins the next point to suggest he's no interest in that display of machismo. Alcaraz into the net behind his serve to dispatch a forehand. Next time he comes in, Sinner goes long and Alcaraz darts straight back to his chair after chalking up a fourth game in a row.

Jannik Sinner* 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 1-3 Carlos Alcaraz – BREAK

Sinner finds a timely big serve at 15-15, from which Alcaraz can only loop a return long. The world No. 1 seizes on the advantage and drills Alcaraz back with some blistering forehands. 40-15, but then he thumps a smash into the net.  The next point is also weirdly loose and it's deuce. Sinner is into the tramline as he looks for the ace out wide but then forces Alcaraz to go long and continue his spiky monologue. Whatever he said works this time, as the champion comes in behind a drop shot and wins the point with a two-handed backhand. Sinner then hooks a forehand into orbit to cough up break point. A long, suffocatingly tense rally follows, incredibly high quality before Sinner yields and nets! What a turnaround early in this third set.

Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 1-2 Carlos Alcaraz*

Alcaraz gets ahead in this service game. He then puts an attempted drop shot into the net before another uncharacteristically loose moment from Sinner. Second serve and a rally in the balance until Sinner goes long. An ace out wide from Alcaraz and a big "VAMOOOOSSSS!!!".

Jannik Sinner* 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 1-1 Carlos Alcaraz – BREAK

Alcaraz looks cranky as he thumps a forehand halfway up the net. A little more patience before a drive volley allows the Spaniard to get it back to 30-30. There's no change out of Sinner's unerring forehand as it sets up game point, although he's off target himself for deuce. Alcaraz has to seize something here. That'll do, a scything inside-out forehand winner for break point... and Sinner goes long in the next rally! It was really hard to see Sinner loosening his grip, but we're back on terms in the third.

Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 1-0 Carlos Alcaraz* – BREAK

Alcaraz gets us underway in set three, having never won a slam match from two sets down. From 15-0 he bleeds three successive points. He's seething with himself. This could be the match right here. He's aggressive in the rally... two aggressive as he drags a forehand wide. Sinner is two sets and a break up! It would be an all-time comeback if Alcaraz can salvage something from here

Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (7-4) Carlos Alcaraz – TIE-BREAK: JANNIK SINNER TAKES TWO-SET LEAD

Alcaraz tries to manoeuvre out of a tight spot but his attempt to drop one over the net is wide. Two mini-break for Sinner, who moves to 5-2. Two points from the set, although he's been here before. A meaty second serve is put into the net by Alcaraz and here come four set points. A fault to start and a safe second serve that Alcaraz climbs into before Sinner nets. 6-3 heading into Alcaraz's service points. That's magnificent from the champion! Sinner in at the net, scenting blood, but he can't put the volley away ans Alcaraz passes him. Gets a look at a second serve here though and a fizzing forehand crosscourt can only be patted into the net by Alcaraz! Sinner two sets up and closing in on glory!

Jannik Sinner 6-4 7-6 (4-2) Carlos Alcaraz – TIE-BREAK

Sinner to serve first in the breaker. A fault but a fine second right up the T. Alcarez can only plonk it back into the middle of the court and it's dispatched. Alcaraz levels at 1-1 and finds a big serve to extend the wait for a mini-break. Ace from Sinner. Wallop! Now he drives Alcaraz wide, moves him across the court and the Spaniard is into the tramline. 3-2 Sinner. Alcaraz's next serve is into the net. Sinner's forehand return is brilliant, he dictates this one and creams a glorious forehand winner to wrong-foot Alcaraz!

Jannik Sinner 6-4 6-6 Carlos Alcaraz*

Alcaraz is hitting these forehands with bad intentions as he moves to 30-0. Sinner can't sort his feet out coming into the net and we're a point away from the breaker. Alcaraz might have left his mid-set malaise behind at the perfect time as he concludes an emphatic hold to love.

Jannik Sinner* 6-4 6-5 Carlos Alcaraz

Sinner gets this one underway by shanking a forehand and hearing what has become a staunchly pro-Alcaraz crowd think of it. He responds nicely to get to 30-15. A fabulous rally follows, with each man using the full dimensions of the court and Sinner prevailing with a cool lob volley. Wallop, an ace. Alcaraz must hold to force the tie-break.

Jannik Sinner 6-4 5-5 Carlos Alcaraz*

Alcaraz out of the blocks and to 30-0 in no-nonsense fashion. Sinner long with his next return. Three game points. Alcaraz is grunting on the forehand as they duke it out but he goes beyond the baseline. Sinner clumps his return with the frame but it drops on the line, Alcaraz unpeturbed though and closes out an emphatic hold to level the set.

Jannik Sinner* 6-4 5-4 Carlos Alcaraz – BREAK

Sinner serving for a second set he has led for the duration. Starts with a fault before Alcaraz nails a glorious inside out winnerHe backs it up with a smooth forehand to go to 0-30. Now then... Sinner long with his first serve. Alcaraz waits omn the baseline, gets the return in play but is then wide. Brilliant point from Sinner, forcing Alcaraz to net on the run, looking down the line. He pumps his first, two points from a two-set lead. The serve out wide is too wide and Alcaraz is after the second one, getting on top in the rally and forcing break point. Backhand return on the second serve and Sinner goes long! From nowhere, Alcaraz is back on serve. If he backs it up and holds, that could be a huge moment.

Jannik Sinner 6-4 5-3 Carlos Alcaraz*

Alcaraz serving to stay in the second and Sinner goes out via the net to make it 30-0. At 30-15, Alcaraz puts plenty of juice on a second serve and Sinner nets. The next serve is way wide but Sinner can't capitalise as Carlos holds to 15.

Jannik Sinner* 6-4 5-2 Carlos Alcaraz

Alcaraz with a backhand down the line for 0-15, to the delight of a crowd clearly keen to see a contest. He's just long with an audacious lob on the next point - a let-off for Sinner who is then off-target with a volley. 15-30, half a chance for Alcaraz. He sets himself deep to receive a second serve. Sinner takes all the pace off and Alcaraz, off balance, hacks his forehand out. He's able to see the funny side. Again, Alcaraz stands far back for another second serve, puts this one back in play conservatively but nets. We repeat the dance again at 40-30, this time he gets back to the baseline but goes long. It felt like Alcaraz got himself in a muddle by trying to knock Sinner out of his relentless rhythm there, passing up a good position in the game in the process.

Jannik Sinner 6-4 4-2 Carlos Alcaraz*

Alcaraz is only winning about half of the points behind his first serve today. He feathers those numbers a little by racing to 30-0, only to take one on the frame of the racquet on an unsuccessful venture to the net. In a flash, Sinner is back to 30-30 before he cannons a backhand out off the net from mid-court. Double fault for deuce. Alcaraz is grappling with himself out there right now. Sinner gets a look at a second serve but can't take charge of the rally and is wide with his backhand. Let, Alcaraz gets another go at a first serve on game point and brings his gorgeous drop shot out of the bag, A timely indication of some confidence.

Jannik Sinner* 6-4 4-1 Carlos Alcaraz

Scintillating rally to start the fifth game of the set. A net cord seemingly puts Sinner at a disadvantage but Alcaraz slices his backhand into the net. The next point is clinical, with Alcaraz going long trying to retrieve a backhand down the line. 30-0. Alcaraz gets into the game but he's second best in the rallies right now in a way he seldom is on clay, netting for 40-15. Ohhh, but Sinner is just into the tramlines with the backhand. No need to worry unduly, as he promptly puts another game on the board.

Jannik Sinner 6-4 3-1 Carlos Alcaraz*

Alcaraz needs a hold here. Sinner goes wide but that doesn't stop him rattling away at his coaching team again. Plenty of venom on the forehand for 30-0. This is fire vs. ice right now. Alcaraz pushes Sinner back and the backhand is long. Good serve out wide but Alcaraz's desire to clatter the case off everything in this game catches up with him as he goes needlessly long. First serve into the net at 40-15 and Sinner produces a gorgeous backhand return winner. A serve-volley is tidily put away on the backhand and Alcaraz is on the board in the second set.

Jannik Sinner* 6-4 3-0 Carlos Alcaraz

Alcaraz goes for a big backhand down the line, which isn't far away. He looks to be trying to blast his way back into form, marking a contrast to the metronomic Sinner, whose unerring forehand sets up a superb point for 40-15. Alcaraz goes into the net and Sinner has won the past five games.

Jannik Sinner 6-4 2-0 Carlos Alcaraz* – BREAK

Alcaraz set for a 15-15 before Sinner takes the lead in the game. This is a big service game for a player who just appears to be grasping for Sinner's coattails at this point. Alcaraz honks a forehand skywards and here are two break points. Brilliant return from Sinner on the second serve, Alcaraz manages to stay in the rally but goes long! Sinner a set and a break up in the final!

Jannik Sinner* 6-4 1-0 Carlos Alcaraz

No let-up from Sinner after gratefully receiving those Alcaraz errors. The Spaniard is back on song in a muscular rally, though, as Sinner nets. Some furious backhand trading ends with Sinner going long and it's 30-30. Sinner is then long with his first serve, which an umpire inspection confirms, only for Alcaraz to botch his subsequent return and admonish himself at length. He challenges those frustrations into a fine rally, where Sinner pulls a forehand wide cross-court. Deuce. Sinner's next serve is called out but Alcaraz sportingly acknowledges it it the line. That ace allows him to get out o of the game next point.

Jannik Sinner 6-4 Carlos Alcaraz* – BREAK: SINNER WINS FIRST SET

A delay to the start of this game as Alcaraz gets treatment for what appears to be some of the court dust getting into his eye. Not ideal when you're serving to stay in the set. Still he continues to be aggressive, with mixed results as we get to 15-15. Another miss keeps us all squad. 30-30 at 5-4 to Sinner, big moments... good first serve from Alcaraz but he's wide with a forehand into the tramlines and Sinner has set point after 62 minutes. Alcaraz crashes a backhand agaisnt the top of the net... and out! Jannik Sinner leads the men's French Open final!

Jannik Sinner* 5-4 Carlos Alcaraz

Some cat and mouse as Sinner reads Alcaraz coming in on a second serve and cramps him for room. The Spaniard hangs back on another second serve to outfox Sinner with a looping return. The world No. 1 dusts himself off from that to win the game to 15 in authoritative fashion.

Jannik Sinner 4-4 Carlos Alcaraz*

Sinner gets a little treatment on his foot in between games, having some more tape applied to a potential blister. Not ideal when you're into a high-quality mmatch that looks likely to last a while. Nevertheless, he gets ahead at 15-30 in this one as Alcaraz goes long after a second serve. That seems to lift the champion's intensity a little but he's second best in an enthralling rally, netting the backhand to give Sinner a break point. Alcaraz pulls out an unreturnable and then produces a lovely inside out forehand winer from the back of the court for advantage. It's three brilliant points in a row for a vital hold.

Jannik Sinner* 4-3 Carlos Alcaraz

Just the sort of service game Sinner would have wanted after breaking back. A wonderfully volley cross court takes him to 40-0. The next serve is off target but the Italian is still able to close out a hold to love.

Jannik Sinner 3-3 Carlos Alcaraz* – BREAK

Some flat shots from the back of the court and Sinner get the better of the exchange. Now Alcaraz goes long for 0-30, opening the door to an instant break back. A big forehand and a smash gets Carlos on the board in this game. Ohhh, lovely volley at the net from Alcaraz in behind the serve. Sinner's response is brilliant, crunching a return into Alcaraz's toes to claim a break point. He'll have a look at second serve too, gets into the rally Alcaraz sluggishly nets a backhand. It's back on terms and that was a maddeningly loose game for Alcaraz after he battled so hard to get the break.

Jannik Sinner* 3-2 Carlos Alcaraz – BREAK

Sinner gets ahead in his next service game but the errors are starting to flow a little from his forehand as he booms into the net. Second serve at 30-15 and Alcaraz successfully forces his opponent deep and wide. The Italian's first-serve percentage is only at 50. He fluffs a ball toss then gets a let. Another fault follows. Alcaraz gets on top of his return brilliantly and dominates the rally to get into the net and earn break point. Alcaraz stands a litle deeper for this return and gets into the rally only for Sinner to find a brutal forehand down the line from the back of the court. A monstrous shot. Back comes comes Alcaraz to gain a seventh break point on the Sinner serve. Sinner get his first serve in but Alcaraz nails the backhand return and he goes wide. First blood to the champion!

Jannik Sinner 2-2 Carlos Alcaraz*

Uh oh, Alcaraz makes a mess of a deftly attempted volley at the net to slip to 0-30 and hand Sinner an opening. Jannik throws the kitchen sink at a forehand down the line but is just off target. Next Alcaraz serve into the net. His second is solid though and he forces Sinner into the tramlines. Back to all-square in the game. Sinner going well in the next rally before a blistering Alcaraz backhand down the line draws oohhs, ahhhs and roars from the crowd. More heavy baseline trading and Sinner nets. From 0-30, Alcaraz should be very happy with that.

Jannik Sinner* 2-1 Carlos Alcaraz

Alcaraz is long with a backhand before some baseline trading after a second serve sees Sinner net from the same wing. 15-15. Winning consecutive points is a tricky thing so far. But Alcaraz does just that and they both get into the net in a lovely exhcnage and the champion dispatched the backhand volley for two break points. His first return is wide. Sinner has been ice cold on these, that's now four break points saved. Can he make it five? His first serve spins out off the net but he puts plenty on a fizzing second and Alcaraz can only net. Brilliant from Sinner as he turns a scampering Alcaraz around to the extent he drops his racket. Game point and serve-volley works for Sinner on clay. We've been around the houses a little but remain on serve three games in.

Jannik Sinner 1-1 Carlos Alcaraz*

Alcaraz will almost always choose the aggressive play, but it doesn't work here as Sinner lobs him at the net and his hotdog shot is way long. He wastes little time in getting to 15-15 but Sinner gets a look at a second serve and forces Alcaraz to net. Sinner is well placed in the next rally too, only to clatter a forehand out via the net cord. 30-30. Like his opponent, Alcaraz is not yet landing many first serves and Sinner now has a break point. Alcaraz finds a big serve when he needs it and Sinner can only grope forlornly at it to the backhand side. He can't repeat the trick but gets into the net after a second serve and puts the volley away. Sinner nets a forehand and Alcaraz levels it up. Nought out of four break points taken over two games spanning 18 minutes.

Jannik Sinner* 1-0 Carlos Alcaraz

Right then, here we go. Sinner to serve first. Backhand exchanges on the first point before Alcaraz whips a forehand and Sinner nets. High-quality stuff, starting as we mean to go on. Sinner finds a smart second serve and pulls it back to 15-15. Alcaraz gets another look at a second serve and drives his opponent back before Sinner goes long. The Australian Open champion hangs in the next rally nicely before Alcaraz overcooks his forehand, only for Sinner to go long, handing the reigning champion a break point. Sinner finds a big first serve when he needs it for deuce. He thinks he has an ace down the line next up but it's just wide. Nevertheless, Alcaraz dumps his backhand return long. Game point for Sinner, who will need to land a few more first serves than he has here.

A punchy rally ends with the Italian hitting into the tramlines. Alcaraz gets a look at a second serve on deuce but completely misreads the kick. Better this time, after another Sinner fault, as Alcaraz tears off the baseline to return and foreces his foe to net. Sinner goes wide with the backhand cross court and Alcaraz has a second break point. First serve into the net from Sinner before the Spaniard's aggressive approach to a return backfires, but he dominates another rally and the world No. 1 can't make the pass. Break point No. 3. Sinner gets better court position in this rally, though. Alcaraz mixes in up by coming into the net and his volley is easily dispatched. Three break points saved from Sinner as the openign game ticks past 10 minutes. He gets advantage, can he get out of here? Fault, but a good second serve and Alcaraz goes long. Sinner on the board. Settle in folks, this might take a while

3:20 p.m. CET/ 9:20 a.m ET: The players are out to a rapturous reception on Court Philippe-Chatrier. They're into their warmups and we'll be going game-by-game momentarily.

2:50 p.m. CET/ 8:50 a.m ET: Alcaraz has a handed 7-4 advantage in his head-to-head record against Sinner. That's due to wins in each of the past four meetings, including two big ones on clay at the Italian Open last month and last year's Roland-Garros semifinals. Those wins mean Alcaraz is 2-1 on clay overall after Sinner's win in the 2022 Umag final. We have to go back to the Beijing semifinal of 2023 for the Italian's previous win in this rivalry. He would no doubt counter that a more relevant statistic is he has not dropped a set at the 2025 French Open.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Jannik Sinner Italian Open Final

2:30 p.m. CET/ 8:30 a.m ET: These two have seven slams between them but, most notably, have won each of the past five - a run that will obviously extend to six today. Since Novak Djokovic won a record-extending 24th major at the 2023 US Open, Sinner has won two Australian Opens either side of triumphing at Flushing Meadows last year. Alcaraz won at Roland-Garros last year and will begin his bid for a third successive Wimbledon later this month. There will be one first today, though. Neither Sinner or Alcaraz has ever lost a Grand Slam final.

2:00 p.m. CET/ 8:00 a.m ET: Before the first Grand Slam final instalment of what promises to be a generation-defining rivalry, we should address the elephant in the room. Between February 9 and May 4 this year - essentially filling most of the gap between his triumph at the Australian Open and the start of the French Open on May 19 - Sinner served a three-month ban handed down by the World Anti-Doping Agency in relation to a 2024 positive test for clostebol. This came as the result of a settlement between Sinner and WADA, which had appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the International Tennis Integrity Agency's (ITIA) decision not to ban the Italian.

Sinner denied any intentional wrongdoing after explaining the substance had been applied inadvertently by physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi, who had been using a product containing clostebol to treat a cut on his own hand. WADA accepted that Sinner did not intend to cheat and derived no performance-enhancing benefit.
