The Vancouver Whitecaps had a painful trip to Mexico City for the Concacaf Champions Cup final.

They lost 5-0 to Cruz Azul in a total shellacking.

But it got worse.

Now, according to The Athletic, the Whitecaps have fallen intensely ill.

The Whitecaps announced that a "significant number" of players and staffers are sick with gastrointestinal symptoms.

The Athletic reported that a source indicated that it's at least 33 people involved with the illness.

Vancouver hasn't yet made an announcement on its next MLS match's status.

The Whitecaps are slated to return to league play on Sunday night against the Seattle Sounders. Their next game after that is Saturday, June 14, so one postponement may be enough to heal up.

In the meantime, it's been a brutal week for Vancouver's potent soccer club.

The Whitecaps have to hope things turn around sooner rather than later.
