Liverpool celebrated their 2024/25 Premier League title with a trophy parade on May 26, but the celebration turned to chaos, after a car collided with pedestrians.

The incident occurred at around 6 p.m. local time in Liverpool with the city full of fans celebrating the success of Arne Slot's team.

As part of a fast-moving investigation, Merseyside Police confirmed a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area was arrested at the scene, with the view he was the driver of the vehicle.

The aftermath of the horrifying incident saw a total of 79 people injured, with 27 of those — including multiple children — taken to local hospitals with two confirmed as suffering serious injuries. As of May 28, reports suggested that seven people remained in hospital

A Police cordon remained in place across the Dale Street/Water Street area of the city centre for 48 hours following the incident, with police confirming the arrested individual was being questioned on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving offences and driving while unfit through drugs.

A fresh update was provided by Merseyside Police and the U.K. Crown Prosecution Service [CPS] on the investigation on May 29 and confirmed charges against a named individual.

Liverpool parade car crash: Suspect named, charges updated

After being granted extra time to interview the suspect by the CPS, Merseyside Police confirmed on May 29 the details of the charge sheet, with the man charged named as Paul Doyle.

Per a statement from Merseyside Police, Mr Doyle has been charged with multiple offences including dangerous driving, causing grievous bodily harm with intent, unlawful and malicious wounding with intent to cause GBH and attempting to cause unlawful and malicious GBH with intent.

A previous line of enquiry of attempted murder has not be included in the charges at this stage of the investigation.

Merseyside Police also reiterated their request to avoid sharing footage of the incident online and via social media, and urged the public not to speculate over the details and motivation behind the incident.

CCTV from a wide area of Liverpool city centre is being reviewed by investigators, with police reportedly working under the assumption that Mr Doyle may have tailgated an ambulance into Water Street after a barrier was temporarily moved to allow for emergency access.

A handful of pedestrians caught the collision on video during the parade. As per the police's request, The Sporting News has decided not to share links to that footage here, although it remains viewable on social media.

Liverpool parade attendance

While the exact total is unknown, ITV News reported "hundreds of thousands" were in attendance for Liverpool's parade. The event effectively brought the heart of the city to a standstill as fans celebrated, with excitement particularly palpable as Liverpool's most recent EPL title came when large gatherings were restricted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Liverpool parade crash reaction

Reaction to the events that unfolded during Liverpool's trophy parade was swift, with football clubs, fans and high-profile personalities both in the game and beyond expressing their shock and support for the victims.

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer tweeted soon after the incident was first reported that the scenes in Liverpool were "appalling", and he thanked the police and emergency services for their swift response.

Liverpool FC also pledged their support and thoughts to the victims, including via a video message from CEO Billy Hogan posted on X.
