Most goals by a team in a season: Panthers set salary cap-era record in win over Red Wings image

If you've been watching the NHL this season, you will have noticed that the Panthers love to score. And they're really, really good at it.

The top team in the Eastern Conference took down the Red Wings 5-2 on April 21 for its 12th consecutive win. It was the team's 32nd game of at least five goals scored this season.

Florida's high-powered offense made history as well. Mason Marchment's tally late in the first period was the Panthers' 320th goal of the season, setting an NHL record for most goals by a team in the salary-cap era, not including shootout goals.

The previous mark was 319 by the Lightning during the 2018-19 season. The Panthers are now up to 322 goals and still have five games to go in their season.

Looking at NHL history, the Panthers' total isn't close to being the most ever. The Oilers teams of the 1980s had five seasons of more than 400 goals.

What team has scored the most goals in a season?

As mentioned, it's the Oilers. They're the only franchise to hit 400 goals in a season, and they accomplished it five times during the 1980s.

But a number of other franchises have recorded goal totals well into the high 300s.

What team has scored the most goals in a season during the salary cap era?

While the Panthers' total sits outside the top 100 all time, it's at the top of the rankings for the salary cap era, which is all the seasons after the 2004-05 lockout.

Florida is the fifth team to reach at least 300 goals in a season during this period.
