Maple Leafs vs. Panthers Game 7 final score, results: Brad Marchand's strong night sends Florida to conference finals image

In a series full of runs, Panthers vs. Maple Leafs all came down to Sunday night.

After the defending Stanley Cup champions answered Toronto's 2-0 start by ripping off three straight victories, the Maple Leafs forced Game 7 in the second-round matchup. But ultimately, an attempt to rekindle their postseason run was for naught.

Florida dominated the final 40 minutes of Sunday's Game 7, claiming a 6-1 victory that now sends the Panthers to an Eastern Conference Final matchup against the Hurricanes. Veteran center Brad Marchand, a trade deadline acquisition for Florida, stepped up to the stage in the victory, posting a goal and two assists.

The Maple Leafs, playing in front of their home crowd, showed life in the first frame by keeping things scoreless. But the Panthers' barrage of shots eventually proved too much too handle. By the end of the second period, it was 3-0 Florida, a lead that only ballooned in the third period. Alongside Marchand, the collection of Jonah Gadjovich, Anton Lundell, Eetu Luostarinen, Sam Reinhart and Seth Jones all found the back of the net.

The Panthers' quest for consecutive titles will continue with the clutch victory. Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs' recent history full of playoff collapses continued, as they lost yet another Game 7; Toronto has yet to win a series-deciding matchup since 2004.

The Sporting News tracked updates and highlights from Game 7 between the Panthers and Maple Leafs. Here's what you may have missed from the matchup.

Maple Leafs vs. Panthers highlights from Game 7

(All times ET)

10:18 p.m. — That'll do it. The Panthers blow out the Maple Leafs in Game 7, ending Toronto's chances at overcoming a 3-2 series deficit after originally taking a 2-0 lead. 6-1 is the final, as Marchand posts a goal and two assists. Florida will face Carolina in the conference final.

10:14 p.m. — Marchand is now set to be 5-0 all-time against the Maple Leafs in playoff series. The former Bruin has historically owned Toronto in the postseason.

Panthers 6, Maple Leafs 1

10:12 p.m. GOAL — Another point made by the Panthers. With an open goal, Marchand continues his strong performance with a shot down the length of the ice to make it 6-1. It's been a dreadful final 40 minutes for Toronto, with Florida simply taking this Game 7 over.

10:03 p.m. — Brad Marchand's legend has grown tonight. With two assists in this game, he's now tied for the all-time NHL mark for career assists in a Game 7.

Panthers 5, Maple Leafs 1

10:00 p.m. GOAL — This is now entering blowout territory. Sam Reinhart finds the back of the net from range, and the Panthers are coasting on the road, silencing the Toronto crowd in the process.

Panthers 4, Maple Leafs 1

9:47 p.m. GOAL — How about an immediate answer from Eetu Luostarinen? Brad Marchand gets the assist as the Panthers, at least for now, shut down comeback talks for the Maple Leafs. It's back to a three-goal lead for Florida.

Panthers 3, Maple Leafs 1

9:44 p.m. GOAL — The Maple Leafs are on the board. They still trail by two goals, but Max Domi trims the deficit with a score, assisted by Bobby McMann.

9:40 p.m. — The third period is under way. Florida is 20 minutes from continuing its quest for back-to-back titles, while Toronto is 20 minutes from elimination, if things hold as they are.

9:38 p.m. — Paul Bissonnette is not happy with what he's seen from Toronto.

End of second period: Panthers 3, Maple Leafs 0

9:19 p.m. — At the end of the second period, Florida's outburst of goals has it in the driver's seat to advance in the postseason. Unless Toronto can put together a historic comeback in this final frame, the Panthers will be taking on the Hurricanes in the conference final.

9:07 p.m. — Some frustration on the Maple Leafs' side of things:

9:05 p.m. — In the span of just around nine minutes, the Panthers have completely blown this Game 7 open. Florida has full advantage, and the Maple Leafs appear headed for yet another Game 7 loss unless they can structure a late rally.

Panthers 3, Maple Leafs 0

8:55 p.m. GOAL — Wow! Jonah Gadjovic piles on with the Panthers' third goal of the night, and Scotiabank Arena is dead silent. Florida has scored three times in less than seven minutes and is in total control in Game 7.

Panthers 2, Maple Leafs 0

8:52 p.m. GOAL — Anton Lundell gives the Panthers a 2-0 lead! Woll got the initial save, but Lundell got the rebound and sent it through for Florida's second goal in about four minutes. The Maple Leafs are in serious trouble, but there are still more than 32 minutes to play.

Panthers 1, Maple Leafs 0

8:46 p.m. GOAL — Seth Jones silences the crowd! The defenseman takes advantage of a 2-on-1 and sends one past Joseph Woll to give the Panthers the lead with 16:43 remaining in the second period.

8:40 p.m. — Plenty of blood is being scraped off the ice before play resumes. An alternate official is also coming onto the ice. That's Chris Rooney heading back down the tunnel.

8:38 p.m. — The second period is underway, but an official was struck in the face with a stick 13 seconds in and is being tended to. There is blood visible, but he was able to skate off with assistance rather than requiring a stretcher.

8:30 p.m. — Both teams had their share of opportunities in the first period. As the pressure grows by the minute, it'll be interesting to see if either side starts tightening up.

End of first period: Maple Leafs 0, Panthers 0

8:13 p.m. — Through 20 minutes, we're scoreless. The Panthers came out on a shot rampage, which has since slowed down as the Maple Leafs evened things out. Woll is up to nine saves, while Sergei Bobrovsky has seven for Florida.

8:08 p.m. — Some celebrities in the building for Game 7:

7:58 p.m. — The first period remains quiet, but the Maple Leafs have finally gotten a shot-on-goal nearly 12 minutes in. The Toronto crowd is into it as their Maple Leafs seek to flip their Game 7 woes.

7:48 p.m. — The Panthers are owning the shot department early, getting eight shots off over the first six-plus minutes. But Joseph Woll is up to an early seven saves for Toronto.
