Tennessee Titans linebacker Cedric Gray is entering his second NFL season, competing for a starting role. A fourth-round pick in the 2024 draft, Gray impressed last season, but is still working to earn a consistent spot in the starting lineup.

He was slowed early in his career by a nerve-related shoulder issue, but as the league enters the 2025 regular season, reports from Titans camp indicate he has made notable improvements.

On Saturday, before the preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a fan asked Titans reporter Jim Wyatt whether Gray can make an immediate impact for the team and his chances of earning a starting role soon.

Wyatt replied: "Cedric has improved. He's a tough kid, and he has a big personality. I like seeing him around. But I think he's currently running behind James Williams Sr. in the fight for the starting job opposite Cody Barton. The race isn't over yet. He just has to keep competing and getting better."

Gray is competing with fellow 2024 draft pick James Williams, a converted defensive back whose coverage ability and rapid growth in the linebacker role have impressed coaches.

This competition was anticipated following Lorenzo Carter's retirement. In July, ESPN's Turron Davenport wrote:

"James Williams v. Cedric Gray. The two second-year players battled through tough rookie seasons. Now they'll fight for the opportunity to start next to Barton at inside linebacker."

Veteran Cody Barton will have an irreplaceable role this season. The main uncertainty is which player will secure the starting spot next to Barton. If both James Williams and Cedric Gray play consistently well, that role could shift between them as the season progresses.
