The Seattle Seahawks made one of the more surprising picks in the 2025 NFL draft on Friday night, with the team taking Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe in the third round.
What made the pick even more surprising was the fact that he came off the board before Colorado's Shedeur Sanders, who was widely considered the second-best signal-caller but is in the midst of an epic draft slide.
Milroe has all the tools to be a star at the next level with impressive arm talent and elite athleticism. However, he's going to be a project and needs to work on his accuracy and throwing with anticipation.
Why did Seahawks draft Jalen Milroe?
The Seahawks' selection of Milroe comes a little over one month after the team signed Sam Darnold to replace Geno Smith, who was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders in what was a surprising move.
Darnold comes over from the Minnesota Vikings after a breakout campaign, but the jury is still out on his ability to be a true franchise quarterback after just one good season that saw him have an ugly finish.
Milroe is no threat to Darnold in the short term, as he's going to need a lot of work at the next level. However, the Alabama product does give Seattle a possible successor down the road if Darnold, who is on a three-year deal, doesn't pan out.
Drafting Milroe might not address an immediate need, but he does give the Seahawks a future option at the most important position in football.
