The Pittsburgh Steelers revamped their quarterback room this offseason, as the team let Russell Wilson and Justin Fields walk in free agency and replaced them with Aaron Rodgers, Mason Rudolph, and Will Howard.
Rodgers will serve as the starter in 2025, with Rudolph and Howard as the backups. However, Fansided's Justin Carter believes the Steelers could trade for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones before the trade deadline on November 4.
"Adding Jones to at least give Rudolph some competition would be a smart move by this Steelers front office. Obviously, this is all a moot point if Rodgers comes in and looks like his old self and is able to avoid causing issues in the locker room," Carter wrote.
Jones signed a two-year deal with the 49ers this offseason after starting seven games for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024. The Alabama product tossed eight touchdowns to eight interceptions with a 65.3% completion rate last year.
Though he could be a solid backup, adding Jones doesn't make much sense for Pittsburgh. The team already has an adequate backup on the roster in Rudolph, and Howard is also a viable depth option.
Giving up draft capital for a below-average starter and decent backup in Jones would be an abysmal move from general manager Omar Khan. It would create a crowded quarterback room that the Steelers don't need right now.
