The Pittsburgh Steelers are interested in former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Gabe Davis, as evidenced by their scheduled visit with the veteran on Tuesday.
The meeting will be the second between the two sides after they spoke in June and will feature a medical follow-up to check on the torn meniscus Davis suffered in 2024.
But the Steelers aren't the only team Davis is meeting with. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac reports that Davis will also meet with the Bills.
"Gabe Davis having a medical follow-up with Steelers today. Visiting his former team, Buffalo, tomorrow. Steelers had medical concerns when Davis visited previous time," Dulac wrote.
Davis signed a three-year, $39 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars last offseason, but he only lasted one year before he was cut in May.
Davis tallied 20 catches for 239 yards and two touchdowns in 10 games before he succumbed to his knee injury, which he said dates back to 2023.
"I had torn my PCL meniscus. I had torn it the 17th game in 2023 in Buffalo. And then signed with Jacksonville and [explicit] never got back right," Davis explained
"So I was just running like Week 10 and just took a cut and then felt a pop in my knee and went to go try to walk to the sideline."
While the Steelers clearly need another veteran wideout given the uncertainties surrounding their options outside of DK Metcalf, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that the team's faith in Roman Wilson had stopped them from making such a move.
But the team's interest in Davis shows that is not the case and it's pretty clear the Steelers are wisely still exploring their options, even after Wilson broke out in preseason Week 2.
Before his failed stint in Jacksonville, Davis posted back-to-back 700-yard seasons with the Bills. His best season came in 2022, when he finished with a career-high 836 yards and seven touchdowns.
Davis has always been plagued by inconsistency, though, and coming off a poor season in 2024, he's no lock to make the kind of impact the Steelers need.
That said, given Pittsburgh's unsure situation, it would be worth taking a flyer on the 26-year-old.
The Bills also have a clear need at wide receiver and will offer stiff competition for Davis' services, especially given the fact he's already familiar with Buffalo.
