Is Aaron Rodgers playing tonight? What we know about Steelers QB's status for preseason opener image

The Pittsburgh Steelers will begin their preseason slate on Saturday night when they travel to Duval to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Steelers have some new pieces on both sides of the ball this year, but none are more notable than starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who was inked to a one-year deal back in June.

Rodgers has been acclimating to his new teammates and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith's offense in training camp, but will that acclimation continue with some snaps in the preseason opener against the Jags?

Here's the answer.

Is Aaron Rodgers playing tonight?

According to ESPN's Brook Pryor, Rodgers is one of several starters not suiting up in the first exhibition game of 2025.

Here's a look at the full list of healthy players not taking any snaps:

  • QB Aaron Rodgers
  • RB Jaylen Warren
  • WR DK Metcalf
  • TE Jonnu Smith
  • TE Pat Freiermuth
  • G Isaac Seumalo
  • DL Cam Heyward
  • CB Joey Porter Jr.
  • CB Darius Slay
  • CB Jalen Ramsey
  • S DeShon Elliott
  • LB Patrick Queen
  • EDGE T.J. Watt
  • EDGE Nick Herbig
  • K Chris Boswell

Rodgers' absence definitely removes some juice from this game, as does the absence of rookie Will Howard, who is out with a broken finger.

Will Aaron Rodgers play this preseason?

Rodgers has made it clear he's open to playing in the preseason if head coach Mike Tomlin wants him to.

"It's an interesting conversation," he said. "I think Mike and I have that at some point. I don't think it's in the plan for me to play this week, but whatever Mike wants to do, I'm fully on board."

When asked about Rodgers playing some preseason snaps in the next two games, Tomlin said he hasn't thought about it yet.
