Steelers schedule 2024: Dates & times for all 17 games, strength of schedule, final record prediction

The Pittsburgh Steelers are looking to continue one streak – and break another one – in the 2024 season.

The Steelers finished 10-7 last season, which continued a run of 20 consecutive seasons with a record of .500 or better. Pittsburgh lost, 31-17, to Buffalo in its AFC wild-card game, which extended a streak of five straight playoff losses dating back to the 36-17 loss to New England in the 2016 AFC championship game.

Coach Mike Tomlin enters his 18th season, and Pittsburgh has two new quarterbacks. On March 15, Pittsburgh signed veteran quarterback Russell Wilson to a one-year contract. One day later, the Steelers agreed to trade Chicago a 2025 sixth-round pick that could become a fourth-round pick for Justin Fields.

That revamped a quarterback room, and a strong draft spiced up the competition in the AFC North — a division Pittsburgh has not won since 2020. To put that in perspective, the Steelers have not gone four seasons without a division title since 1985-91, when the division was called the AFC Central.

Pittsburgh has the longest odds to win the division this year, so that is another streak that could get talked about in 2024.

Here is a complete breakdown of the Steelers' 2024 schedule, including dates, start times, and analysis for their slate of games.

The Steelers have a third-place schedule, which means the Jets and Colts are on the schedule. Pittsburgh also will face the AFC East and NFC East, which creates the opportunity for more prime-time games at Acrisure Stadium given the home schedule features the Chiefs and Cowboys.

This season, Pittsburgh has an extra road game. That matchup is at Atlanta. The schedule features seven total games against teams that made the playoffs last year. Outside the AFC North, those teams are Dallas, Philadelphia, and Kansas City.

Steelers strength of schedule

The Steelers rank 32nd in strength schedule for the 2024 season, per Sharp Football Analysis. That means they project to have the hardest schedule in the NFL.

This analysis is based on the projected win totals for each of Pittsburgh's opponents for the upcoming season rather than their records in 2023.

The Bengals (sixth easiest) have an easier schedule, while the Ravens (fourth hardest) and Browns (third hardest) will have tough schedules. That's life in the AFC North, however, where every team had a winning record in 2023.

Toughest tests: The home schedule outside of the division is loaded. Those potential prime-time matchups included the Chiefs – who were an NFL-best 8-2 on the road last season, including playoffs.

The Jets and Chargers were 3-5 on the road, but they will be different teams in 2024. Aaron Rodgers will be back for New York, and Jim Harbaugh will have a more competitive Los Angeles team.

The Eagles will be a tough road game considering they were 6-2 at home last season. Pittsburgh has lost 10 straight games at Philadelphia in the in-state battle; a streak that dates back to 1965.

Biggest breaks: The Cowboys were 4-5 on the road last season, so it's better than having to travel to Jerry World, where they were 8-1. The Giants were 2-7 on the road last season, so there is a chance for the split.

The Russell Wilson payback game at Denver will be interesting, and the Broncos have uncertainty at the quarterback position with Zach Wilson and rookie Bo Nix.

Las Vegas, Indianapolis, and Atlanta are all indoor games, where weather won't be a factor. Those three teams were 15-11 at home last season, however, so even that is not all that easy. Pittsburgh has won six of the last seven meetings with Washington.

Bottom line: It comes down to the AFC North games. Yes, Pittsburgh has the toughest schedule, but so do Baltimore and Cleveland. Cincinnati finished last in the division last year, so they caught a couple of breaks.

Why did Pittsburgh get in the playoffs last season? They were 5-1 in the division last season – with the lone loss an ugly 13-10 matchup at Cleveland. Pittsburgh swept Baltimore and Cincinnati and improved its divisional record to 16-8 in the regular season since 2020.

This was with a quarterback collection that combined for 13 TD passes and nine interceptions. The upgrades on the offensive line via the NFL Draft with Troy Fautanu and Zach Frazier should help. The schedule is daunting, but Tomlin always finds a way. The real question is whether it comes with playoff success this time.

Record prediction: 9-8
