Baker Mayfield was expected to make his preseason debut against the Steelers on Saturday, but Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles changed his mind.
Bowles told Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times that he came away extremely impressed with Mayfield's performance in Thursday's joint practice, so he decided to keep him on the bench. Mayfield is coming off season in which he threw for a career-high 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns.
Veteran Teddy Bridgewater, who signed a contract with Tampa Bay at the beginning of August, is likely to play. Bridgewater is competing with former Florida standout Kyle Trask for the backup quarterback role.
On the other sideline, the Steelers are not expected to play veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who will wait at least another week to make his Pittsburgh debut. Instead, Mason Rudolph will draw his second consecutive start under center.
