Sean Payton was a staple in New Orleans for 15 years, winning a Super Bowl alongside future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees in 2009.
The head coach remained with the Saints through the 2021 season before the organization opted to trade him and a third-round pick to the Denver Broncos in exchange for a first- and second-round pick.
Payton went from a long-time NFC head coach to inking a new deal in the AFC, which meant he wouldn't regularly play his former team anymore.
The year NFL schedule includes each NFC division playing an AFC division. For example, if the NFC East were to play the AFC North, the Giants, Cowboys, Eagles, and Commanders would each play the four AFC North squads.

Payton will return to New Orleans in Week 7 when his Broncos play a "Thursday Night Football" game against the Saints.
It will be Payton's first game in New Orleans since leaving the team after the 2021 season. Payton took on a broadcasting role with Fox during the 2022 season before deciding to return to coaching in 2023. It's uncertain how Saints fans will treat Payton upon his arrival to New Orleans, but there will likely be a loud crowd for that matchup — whether it's positive or negative.
