At 3-1, the Chiefs have started the 2023 NFL season on the right foot. But beneath the surface lies issues that could prove disastrous if they're allowed to fester.

Travis Kelce and Isaiah Pacheco have enjoyed lively starts to the new campaign. Patrick Mahomes hasn't, at least not when compared to his typically explosive self. Mahomes has four interceptions through four games, giving passes away like gifts at times. The Texas-born gunslinger has a little bit of Brett Favre in his game — he'll win you games time and time again with that cannon arm, but he can also flood the airfields with wounded ducks at times.

Mahomes' struggles will likely come out in the wash. He and head coach Andy Reid have proven themselves to be voracious consumers of film and game script. All of that serves well for a Kansas City side still capable of winning games in the midst of finding its feet.

But that's not to say the Chiefs are completely out of the woods, either. A divisional crown looks likely. But to be the best you have to beat the best. And with a receiving corps that reads more like a who's who of speed threats and less like a cohesive pass-catching unit, they certainly have some kinks to iron out.

It's hard not to back them at present. If you have Mahomes, Kelce and Reid, you have a chance. But there's certainly work to be done. Perhaps a matchup with the lowly Vikings can serve as a launching pad for Kansas City's surge back towards the NFL mountaintop.
