Life happens fast in the NFL. In just one year, a player can go from being a local celebrity to a distant memory, and it appears we could be staring down the barrel of that reality with one New York Giants fan favorite.
In the latest Giants 53-man roster projection from The Athletic, backup quarterback Tommy DeVito is left out of what has suddenly become a stocked quarterback room.
"Barring injury, there’s no path to a spot on the active roster for DeVito," The Athletic's Dan Duggan wrote. "It will be interesting to see if any team deems DeVito worthy of an active roster spot if the Giants cut him. There isn’t even a real need for the Giants to use a practice squad spot on DeVito since they’ll have three capable quarterbacks on their active roster. But they could try to stash the 26-year-old if they believe he provides value behind the scenes and as a backup option to Dart in the future."
DeVito burst onto the scene in 2023 after he was forced into duty following injuries to Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor. Devito, who affectionately became known as 'Tommy Cutlets,' started six games and finished the year with a 3-3 record. He made the most of his audition as a starter and earned a roster spot again last season. He even started two games in 2024, too.

But the 2025 New York Giants are a very different team. The quarterback depth chart is headlined by Russell Wilson at the top, with veteran Jameis Winston and first-round pick Jaxson Dart behind him.
For as fun as DeVito was during his 15 minutes of fame in the Big Apple, I don't think he showed enough on film to warrant another team signing him after final cutdown day. He's a safe bet to return to the Giants' practice squad, where his persona will continue to live on in New York.
