The New Orleans Saints are officially handing the reins to rookie quarterback Tyler Shough, who will start Sunday’s preseason matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Head coach Kellen Moore confirmed the decision, according to Adam Schefter via his X account.
In his preseason debut, Shough threw for 165 yards and a touchdown, bouncing back from a pick-six with a 54-yard strike that showcased his ability to respond under pressure.
That outing added fuel to the conversation about whether he could rise quickly in the Saints’ quarterback competition.
With Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener also competing for playing time, this game gives Shough a prime opportunity to prove he can command the offense against an aggressive Jacksonville defense.
As Hayden Reel of Canal Street Chronicles notes, the Saints’ passing attack has room to rebound, and Shough will be at the center of that effort.
Moore has made it clear that all three quarterbacks will continue to see action this preseason, but starting against Jacksonville puts the spotlight firmly on Shough.
A strong performance could tilt momentum in his favor as the Saints evaluate who gives them the best chance to win heading into the regular season.
