The first full day of New Orleans Saints training camp wrapped up with good vibes, solid football, and, most importantly, no injuries.
That might sound small, but for a team that spent much of last season ravaged by health issues, it’s a huge win.
Practice ran with good pace and intensity. All three quarterbacks, Spencer Rattler, Tyler Shough, and Jake Haener, got reps with the second team. While the offense had its moments, it was the defense that made a few more splash plays during team drills. Still, it was a balanced and productive day, exactly the kind of tone-setting practice coaches like to see early in camp.
After practice ended, players made their way to the sidelines where they greeted fans, signed autographs, and tossed the football around with kids. Quarterback Jake Haener stood out as the clear crowd favorite, especially among the younger fans. He stayed longer than most, going out of his way to interact with kids in a moment that will stick with them well beyond camp.
Among the more notable names spending time with fans were new safety Terrell Burgess and starting cornerback Alontae Taylor, both of whom stopped to sign autographs and answer questions.
I had a chance to ask Taylor who the toughest wide receiver he’s had to cover since entering the league in 2022 was. His answer?
“Davante Adams,” now with the Los Angeles Rams.
Taylor didn’t hesitate and answered with a smile before turning his attention back to the group of kids swarming the fence.
All in all, it was a strong opening day for the Saints. The players looked focused, the fans brought energy, and the vibe around the team felt healthy and hopeful.
Here’s hoping the second day brings a little more action and the same good health.
