The Miami Dolphins are shaping up to be one of the unluckiest teams in this year’s training camp—if not the most unfortunate. Head coach Mike McDaniel enters the season with plenty to prove, but it seems like fate may be working against him as he fights to remain at the helm beyond 2025.
“All of those now put a tremendous amount of pressure on McDaniel, who is coming off his first under .500 season with the Dolphins, who were also on the outside looking in on the playoffs. We already listed McDaniel as a head coach with one of the hottest seats in the NFL entering 2025, and the road to save his job just got even more difficult,” CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan wrote.
Injuries have ravaged the Dolphins' secondary, significantly dampening the team’s outlook. Right now, there aren't many bright spots. In response, the Dolphins signed two veteran cornerbacks last weekend to help stabilize the unit.
“Miami signed veteran cornerback Mike Hilton to help bolster the unit, NFL Network's Cam Wolfe reported on Saturday. The Dolphins announced earlier in the day that they had signed cornerback Jack Jones,” NFL.com’s Eric Edholm wrote.
The cornerbacks just keep going down, and there’s not much the Dolphins can do about it. The injury bug has taken hold, and with every passing day, it seems like someone else goes down. SI’s Dante Collinelli suggests the Dolphins could look to sign veteran corner Stephon Gilmore.
“Despite the fact that he’ll be 35 on Sept. 19, Gilmore has played in at least 15 games in each of the last three seasons. Last year with the Vikings, he had one interception, nine passes defended, and a passer rating allowed of 94.1,” Collinelli wrote. “It’s clear Gilmore isn’t the same player who made four straight Pro Bowls from 2018 to 2021 and won the Defensive Player of the Year in 2019, but he’s a high-floor option.”

While Gilmore may no longer have top-tier speed, he still brings reliability. He’s going to suit up and play—he doesn’t miss games without cause. Gilmore would provide a steady veteran presence in a room that desperately needs leadership and direction as the Dolphins figure out their next steps.
