The Los Angeles Chargers have made strides to have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. Last year's first-round selection of Joe Alt combined with the offseason addition of Mekhi Becton following his helping the Philadelphia Eagles win the Super Bowl have helped the Chargers get to that level.

When the team takes the field in 2025, the offensive line will be the strength of the team, just the way Jim Harbaugh wants it. But imagine the line being even stronger.

There are still questions about some of the interior positions along the line. Does the team have a legitimate center? Can Zion Johnson ever reach the level of being a first-round pick? Those are some of the questions the team will need to answer this season.

But there could be another option at the guard position. Veteran offensive lineman Brandon Scherff is still available on the free-agent market and Gilbert Manzano of Sports Illustrated feels that the Chargers have the best situation for him.

"The Chargers prioritized adding more weapons for Justin Herbert in the draft. By doing that, they neglected the remaining holes on the interior of the offensive line. Los Angeles has a strong trio with newcomer right guard Mekhi Becton and bookend tackles Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt. However, the team needs a left guard, especially if Zion Johnson moves to center to replace Bradley Bozeman. Scherff, who’s entering his age-34 season, is more than capable of filling in at guard for one season. The 10-year veteran has 140 career starts and never missed a game in his three seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars", wrote Manzano.

Scherff was chosen as the No. 5 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft by Washington. In his 10 NFL seasons with Washington and Jacksonville, he had been named a First-team All-Pro five times while being selected to the Pro Bowl five times. He may be past his prime at 33 years old, but his experience and consistency could be welcomed additions to the roster.

The Chargers have options at guard even if Johnson were to win the starting center spot. Jamaree Salyer is a capable option, but adding a name like Scherff to put with Becton, Alt and Rashawn Slater could be incredibly tough to deal with.

This is an idea for the Chargers to keep on the back burner as the summer forges on.
