The Colts made a bold decision to name Daniel Jones their starting quarterback for the 2025 season, his first with the team.
Jones now becomes the eighth different Week 1 starting quarterback for the Colts in the last nine years. The lack of consistency has frustrated Indy’s star offensive guard Quenton Nelson.
The All-Pro offensive lineman spoke of that frustration following the announcement that Jones would be the starter.
“I would say so,” he said. “I think I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t. You look around the league and see the consistency of having…like Patrick Mahomes or a quarterback behind you that’s been the franchise player for years, and years, and years. And getting to build that chemistry with that quarterback year after year is something that there is an advantage to when it comes to O-line play.”
Nelson brings up a valid point that teams who stick together for longer tend to be more successful. For example, three of the four teams to reach the conference championship stage of the playoffs in 2025 have had the same starting quarterback for at least four years, with the exception of the Washington Commanders with Jayden Daniels leading the way as a rookie.
The Colts, on the other hand, haven’t even been to the postseason since 2020. The constant revolving door at the most important position in the sport definitely hasn’t helped.
It’s not clear if Jones can be the answer. But recent career trends don’t suggest anything too promising.
Jones is 3-13 as a starter over the last two years and has an overall record of 24-44-1.
