Throughout Colts training camp, rookie tight end Tyler Warren has made impressive play after impressive play.
Warren has even shown glimpses into the difference he can make for the Colts offense during Indy’s preseason opener, catching all three of his targets for 40 yards and adding an extra layer of complexity to the passing game.
But he’s not the only tight end who’s been standing out.
Third-year tight end Will Mallory has been stacking days in camp, becoming a frequent target for both Anthony Richardson Sr. and Daniel Jones.
Head coach Shane Steichen has been pleased with the growth Mallory has shown.
"Obviously, he's a guy that when we saw him coming out of college a couple years ago, good route runner, good hands, and then to see it progress over the last couple of years," Steichen said about Mallory after last Thursday's practice.
“He's made some tight window catches in training camp so far, and you need to make tight window catches in this league, and I think he's done a nice job of that."
Mallory has just 22 career catches through his first two seasons, but that number could certainly go up with more involvement. He still has some work to do to climb up the depth chart, however.
According to the IndyStar’s Nate Atkins, the final tight end spot appears to be a two-horse race between Mallory and Jelani Woods.
Only time will tell if Mallory is able to translate his work in training camp to true production during the season.
