In continuing a tradition started by her late father, Colts new co-owner and CEO Carlie Irsay-Gordon joined the Indianapolis broadcast team in the third quarter of the team’s second preseason contest against the Packers.
Among the topics of conversation was the Colts current quarterback situation. Irsay-Gordon shared her perspective on how things have played out so far.
“This is one of the best camps we’ve had in a long time,” she said on the broadcast. “There’s nothing that makes the good things rise to the surface better than competition. And I think having Daniel (Jones) in here with Anthony (Richardson Sr.)— he’s obviously had more experience than Anthony— but I think that room as a whole, they’re competing in camp.”
Irsay-Gordon acknowledged that all the Colts signal callers have had their ups and downs. In the end, she thinks it’s a difficult choice for head coach Shane Steichen.
“Shane is going to have to make a tough decision, but I feel confident he’s going to make the right decision.”
With Richardson Sr. and Jones both seemingly neck-and-neck, the choice is between those two. Both had similar performances based on the box score against the Packers (Jones- 7-for-11, 101 yards; Richardson Sr.- 6-for-11, 73 yards) but the eye test suggests RIchardson is the more confident, more trustworthy option as he led multiple scoring drives and made some excellent throws, even if they were called back due to penalties.
Still, it’s a decision Steichen has to get right, as his job may end up resting in the hands of his chosen starter.
