After finding a gem in former Michigan Panthers kicker Jake Bates in 2024, the Detroit Lions are trying their hand at finding another one from the UFL.

According to UFL analyst Michael Del Negro, the Lions are hosting Michigan Panthers running back Toa Taua for a workout.

Taua has been with the Panthers since 2023, when they were in the USFL. He had his best season in 2025, though, when he posted career-highs with 81 carries for 356 yards and six touchdowns. He also added nine catches for 76 yards.

Prior to his UFL career, Taua played his college ball at Nevada. Over five seasons, he finished with 855 carries for 3,995 yards and 33 touchdowns while adding 163 receptions for 1,192 yards and another four touchdowns.

It goes without saying that the 5-foot-9, 210-pound running back would have an uphill climb to make the roster if he does land a contract ahead of training camp.

The Lions have a crowded running backs room already with Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery, Craig Reynolds, Sione Vaki and others.

Detroit saw its rookies report to training camp on Wednesday. The rest of the team is set to join them on Saturday.
