The Detroit Lions are just a few practices in at training camp and injuries have already started rolling in.
After the team placed several players on injured lists at the outset of camp, head coach Dan Campbell revealed on Monday that the team's top reserve defensive lineman, Levi Onwuzurike, would miss the entire season.
Then, on Monday, cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. suffered a chest injury that knocked him out of practice early. It was just a contusion, thankfully.
Campbell also stated that linebacker Alex Anzalone is dealing with a hamstring injury, the severity of which is unknown.
On Tuesday, there were more injuries to talk about, as the Lions saw running back Sione Vaki and defensive lineman Roy Lopez depart early. Cornerback D.J. Reed didn't practice at all, although we don't have an update on that yet.
Lions injury updates
According to Justin Rogers of the Detroit Football Network, Campbell said that Vaki is dealing with a hamstring strain, although no timeline for his return was given.
As for Lopez, he got his foot stepped on by a teammate's cleat and it "twisted the top of his foot," Campbell said. Lopez is expected to miss a few days.
Rookie guard Miles Frazier is on the physically unable to perform list with a knee injury and it doesn't look like he'll be ready for the start of the season. Campbell suggested September or October for the rookie's timetable to return.
Sophomore defensive lineman Mekhi Wingo, who is also on the PUP list, is rehabbing a meniscus injury and is expected back in September.
There's some good news to report on linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, who Campbell said could return sooner than expected.
Initially, Rodriguez was slated to return in November, but the Lions head coach believes he could be back in October.
