The Detroit Lions didn't play their starters in the Hall of Fame Game against the Los Angeles Chargers, but there were still plenty of notable things to watch.
One of the most notable things was the backup quarterback competition between Hendon Hooker and Kyle Allen. Unfortunately, neither one delivered.
Allen got the start and completed 9-of-14 passes for 91 yards, but he also threw two interceptions, one of which was reeled in when Allen was gunning for a touchdown pass.
Hooker played the entire second half after relieving Allen in the third quarter and didn't fare much better. The former third-round pick completed just 3-of-6 passes for 18 yards and tossed his own pick, although the interception was a result of Dominic Lovett having the ball ripped out of his hands.
Here's how some Lions fans reacted to the respective performances of the two quarterbacks.
"The Detroit Lions NEED to go get a LEGIT QB2 before this season starts," one fan pleaded. "Zero confidence in Kyle Allen and Hendon Hooker after tonight. Go get a veteran backup. Keep Hooker as the emergency backup."
"Hendon Hooker and Kyle Allen are both awful," another fan proclaimed.
"Hendon Hooker sucks... So does Kyle Allen. Lions should replace both of them by Week 1," said a frustrated Lions fan.
Should Lions fans be worried?
Was either quarterback good last night? No, but it's far too early to panic when there are three preseason games left.
Adding to that, both quarterbacks were operating with backups and Hooker's group might have been worse later in the game. As a result, his performance is a bit more excusable than Allen's.
We should also point out the Lions still have the Teddy Bridgewater card to play if they need a better option at some point down the road and his chances of returning in 2025 just got better after a recent suspension from his head-coaching gig.
This situation absolutely bears monitoring moving forward, but we're going to reserve judgement until we see more in the weeks ahead.
