Denver Broncos Undrafted Rookie Spotlight: Wide receiver Jerjuan Newton image

The Denver Broncos came into the 2025 NFL Draft needing more offensive firepower, though the free-agent signing of tight end Evan Engram took care of some of that.

The team used a third-round pick on Illinois wide receiver Pat Bryant but the group is still quite young and inexperienced overall. To pad the 90-man roster, the team signed four wide receivers as undrafted free agents. The first of those is the subject of this edition of the Undrafted Rookie Spotlight.

Name: Jerjuan Newton
Height: 5-foot-10
Weight: 187
Position: Wide Receiver
School: Toledo

Born in Florida, Jerjuan Newton chose to play at Toledo in college after receiving offers from multiple schools. He finished his career there as the school's all-time leader in touchdown receptions with 32.

It was expected for Newton to go undrafted in this class. His brother, Jer'Zhan Newton, was a second-round pick of the Washington Commanders last season.

Newton began his college career at Toledo in 2019. After a slow start there, he caught 53 passes for 830 yards in 2022. After a similar season in terms of production the next year, he had his best season as a senior in 2024, catching 72 passes for 1,048 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was selected as a member of the First-team All-MAC in 2023 and 2024.

Gems are discovered as undrafted free agents all the time and one of the best undrafted players in NFL history was a wide receiver for the Broncos, Rod Smith. Newton will need to show off his athleticism and play-making ability to make an impression this summer, but he is capable of doing that.

Chances of making final 53-man roster (1-10 scale): 2

There doesn't seem to be a lot of room for an undrafted wide receiver on this year's roster unless injuries become an issue.

If the Broncos keep six wide receivers, those spots will almost certainly go to Courtland Sutton, Marvin Mims Jr., Troy Franklin, Pat Bryant, Devaughn Vele and Trent Sherfield.

After that, A.T. Perry is an intriguing option who could have a spot on the practice squad. That seems like the ceiling for Newton, at least as far as this season is concerned, but with three other undrafted wide receivers to compete with in addition to Michael Bandy and all of the names listed already, it could be a tough hill to climb.
